How to describe Soulmask in one sentence...
Its like it was purposely built to over come what came before it.

The 2 games Soul mask most deeply is like are Ark and Conan Exiles.
Systems around the capturing of Tribe members function like Ark rather than Conan.
Conan's system is mostly flat. Then Soul mask takes it a step further with the systems of direct control over your captured tribe member.

Building, the building and crafting system is more closely align with Conan's but makes the process a bit less painful by linking Crafting tables and containers with in the base. secondly you can automate tasks to tribe members.

Combat. its just better. not the greatest in the world but much richer than almost all survival crafting games.

Now after all that, my one and only con...
flavor. its very much tribal themed Ark.
Ark's theme was pretty bear bones, but being unique to it self it worked.
Conan is very much IP and very "I'm cool, I totally remember when movies on VHS where Rated R meant we got at least 1 sex scene."

I don't know. one feature i wish it had, but i dont know how they could make it work thematically is the Tavern System for Conan.
Some weirdo in a Costume talking like a madman would visit almost ever other day, and the some times they had quests other time they would teach me how to make some rude gesture. it was great.
I haven't seen anything like that yet in Soulmask.

Ark doesn't really have a solo experience. Conan kinda does, but the Characters make it work.
Soulmask holds up ok solo wise just by the sheer fact the combat is more engaging even at low levels.

So it took me a while to realize how much the enemies dont care about you if they are engaged with stuff that fights back.
after that it was night and day, less waited, less hiding. more moving, constant moving, never stopping for longer than it took to loot.

game of the year? no. but im having fun now, i dont die but ever once in a while now.

Relaxing, and stressful.

the only way i would like this more is if it could be played in vr.
no need for special vr controls just the ability to look around.

I really wanted to like this....
The Pros:
Looks great
Has great customization
Lots of Gundams

The Meh:
The story... is there...

Cons:
Stats
Combat

Why is the Combat so terrible?!
Its hollow and meaning less... combos mean nothing....
just spam attack and space and your fine. (Space recovers knockback)

Megaton Mushashi has a much simpler system but feels far more like combat.

I don't think there's saving this the combat is well animated but doesn't feel good at all.

You have your normal attacks
you have your skill attacks (the ones that have cds)
you have your other skill attacks (the ones that are based on charge, your heal is this type)
you have awaken (witch takes too long to charge and doesn't feel like it that impactful)

the damage your skills do don't do enough to feel good.
awaken takes too long for it to feel good.

if its not a boss its just a damage sponge.
Bosses at least have little dots that you hit them all it gets stunned.

Stats... so many stats is 2% of this stat something that will help me?
I don't know! and what about weapons with bounse to other wepons?
Is there a reason to wield a Axe just because my sword in my other hand give is plus 5%?
or should i use weapon that clearly does 5% more than the axe?

This is like what happen with Diablo's bad itemization, just adding lost of posible bonuses does not make a system more robust, it just makes it more obtuse.

its too late but if someone cared, this is how i would save this game.
Make skills extremely impact, they should have a reason why they exist.
Squish stats in to buckets similar stuff you don't need stuff like "Axe lvl to left hand" just make its "Melee lvl to other hand"

Game looks Good but doesn't feel good.

This is the like a fever dream of a game. like the kind someone wrote on a napkin and listed all the things they wanted in it.

And it exist. That is absolutely amazing.

Combat, and it just works well.
Itemization, variety and different.
Player housing, its costumizable and there's alot of items.
Girls, a handful and with dialog.

I does need some polish but its all there.

OK so the things that need polish:
Menus: there functional but bad to look at.
Systems: there are alot of systems, there functional... but some could really use some fleshing out. Example the City system, I can place traps in slots and they have array of deployment points... but i have little to know under standing what they actually look like when deployed. most of the time i cant tell how far out they go, or the items that get deployed are hard to see.
Enemies- they aren't really that interesting, and there hard to see.
Story- is kinda non existant, its more like the world has bullet points on how its made up and works.
Main Character- the "protag" is less a character and more of a existence with a set purpose, at least so in the first several days... it would be nice if we more opportunity to express her especially since she has like a complex morality/though system. She's like trapped between being he own person for the first few seens then is relegated to a viecle for the user to influence others, but she never feels like she need to exist... like WHY are we her, we could have been a faceless person. do i need to care about her as an individual or not? they make an emotional appeal for her in the opening but then side line that.

This is worth owning, its cheap, and it feel like a labor of passion.

its like a Saturday morning Anime version of Armored Core...
Its cute.
Combats not super tight but its servicable.

Some questionable stuff.
Battle pass... doesn't have any real need or reason to exist. its completely ignorable. and even if you get it its not helpful.
PVP... Match making sucks.

Current REVIEW:
"wait till mid summer 2024" well its summer 2024 now
ok... paid mods. not always a bad thing. but man... the pricing for these seems... grimy.
Some mods already look like they have major effort put in.
but others.... like a mod that cost a 100($1) for a cheat/stat boost that could be accomplish with the Console... it just gives "Verified Creators" a bad look.

Lets put that a side and look at the MODs bethesda made themselve.
300($3) for 5 plushes.
700($7) for a quest with dialog, 1 gun, 2 outfits and some bounty hunter gameplay.

starfield is $69.99 ($70) and your telling that 5 plushies are worth 5% of that games budget
that a game with 1000s of lines of dialog, dozens of guns and outfites that this 1 quest is worth 10% of that same game?

Why am i upset its just extra right? is it? if Bethesda is spend time making there own mods.. is it really extra or is it just stuff the though they could cut off or leave out to make a quick extra buck on.

I think these things have value. but im not sure that value is equal to the price.
and verified creators is a can of worms they should not be opening, or should at least be more hands on with. because if a verified creator is willing to make a quick buck. what happens if that mod gets broken. will Bethesda fix it? if its a cash in, i doubt there here for the long haul... and Bethesda is still updating skyrim.... so we can expect things to get broken regularly

OLD REVIEW: Still relevant.... Sadly
Lets face it. Bethesda isn't what the used to be.
Starfield is ok, at best.
It fells so lacking. Like all bethesda games no mod tools a launch and this one really needed it.

Disappointing. thats the word.
Systems are missing, or feel like the were scraped really late.
Story is ok. ish.
Combat is better than usual.

but its like there is minor this here, there, everywhere.
And Bethesda as a company all there reactions aren't making it easy to defend.

Just wait. don't buy, wait till mid summer 2024 mods should be in full swing by then.
Will mods save this? God i hope so...

I want to love this, but its lacking so much.
Also why no radio?

The cost is leaving a sour taste in my mouth.
Yes the game is free.
Yes you can get every card for free.
but its just so expensive if you want to by anything.
For $99 = 8000 gold
800 gold gets you 1 card variant.
so your telling me that its $10 for art work?

Also no voice lines?

Game looks nice. match are ok.
Stratagy isn't the deepest but its still fun.
also its you gamble your lvl exp(cubes) when you play.
that by it self is actual kinda engaging, doubling down on a match and or bluffing on round 6 when you have nothing.

Do I like it yes.
Do I recommend it no. its a money sink, but not really pay to win.
