Chose the "Cannibal" start. Was imprisoned for dinner, then broken free by a rival gang of cannibals that went to war over me as food.

Escaped a handful of times only to be recaptured, then used a fellow entrée prisoner as bait to make my final escape.

Crawled away super injured, made it out safely, and wandered into a Shrieking Forest where bands of naked screaming bandits would run all over but never really attacked me so long as I said I didn't understand them.

Then ended up in a foggy land where I got captured again by these brainless but zealous alien people, tied to a pole, and had my legs eaten off by their Prince while the rest of the congestion prostrated and worshipped the ritual.

Screaming bandits from earlier showed up, distracted the fogmen, and I escaped again, now crawling away with blood spewing from where my legs used to be.

Made it to a local town that didn’t want to eat or kill me, passed out from blood loss, got revived by one of the townsfolk, and their “mechanic” gave me new legs (literally 2 metal poles jammed in my stumps).

I left and went out to make a name for myself. 10/10, incredible game, highly recommend.

Preface: I purchased this game for $35 when EA first launched, and again at $42 as a gift right before launch.

TemTem is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise mildly stale monster-catching genre. There are some other great titles that fall into this genre, and TemTem easily takes one of the top spots. From its unique focus on doubles-battles, to its MMO-esque features, TemTem sports a mixture of familiar and unfamiliar mechanics and methods.

If you enjoy:
  • Monster catching
  • Monster team-building
  • Monster breeding
  • Doubles format (2v2)
  • Socialization
  • Player-driven economy

Then there's a solid chance you'll enjoy TemTem, regardless of what anyone else says, or any other reviews you read. The game is currently facing down a brigade of negative reviews over features, functions, and in-game occurrences that are largely unfounded, or wildly blown out of proportion, and as with most things these days, I'd advise doing some of your own research before trusting words on a screen blindly (my own review included).

Common negative things you'll see mentioned are:

  • A P2W Battlepass system: This is inherently false. There is a Battlepass, but it is entirely cosmetic, has no bearing on the gameplay itself, and is self-sufficient past the first purchase. This means that if you do buy the BP, you'll get in-game MTX currency equal to the cost amount of the BP so that the next BP you buy is paid for by the first. And yes, people are claiming that it is P2W because of a "3% exp boost" in the Premium track, but they are leaving out the part of that where it's "3% exp boost towards Battle Pass experience only."
  • That there wasn't a wipe. This is a controversial subject, and I fully understand the people that are less interested in the game since there hasn't been a wipe from EA -> Launch. However, there's truly a minimal difference between someone who has played the game through EA vs. one who just started at launch. Sure, the more veteran player has more in-game knowledge, but it's nothing that will prevent you from catching up.

The game is a lot of fun. It's dense in content, it's a bit more challenging than other monster catching games, it has a fresh focus on doubles-battles and an exhaustion system, and it's well worth the money. There are plenty of games released today that cost more (Triple A titles, almost every Nintendo title, etc.) and still focus on Battlepass, and while that's not an excuse nor a defense of aggressive monetization, TemTem is definitely not aggressive with it - in fact, you could largely miss it entirely as there's no pop-up asking you to check out the shop or the Battlepass.

Plus, ballin' soundtrack.
