I would recommend this game mostly for kids or casual players. It’s a game where you create a wizard or witch (depending on what you identify as) and try to free the land from “dark magic.” The game has an on-screen tracker that guides you through your missions, and so far the missions are fairly easy.

You do have to sign up using an email address before you can play. There is a paid subscription if you choose to get it, but it’s not like other games where it constantly throws it in your face. I actually had to hunt for it to find it. So far, I haven’t seen anything blocked by the subscription, but I’m still early in the game, so this may change later.

This game does remind me of ToonTown Rewritten, even though it’s made by a completely different developer. The overall gameplay feels similar, although ToonTown does offer more of a challenge so far. One of the biggest differences is the combat system. In ToonTown, you have a set of moves and always know what you can use. In Wizard101, combat works more like drawing cards from a deck.

I’ve played 16.4 hours total. I did have to restart my account, and some of that time includes breaks, but this review is based on my actual gameplay experience so far.

There is a chat system in the game, but most communication uses preset phrases like “I need healing” or “My mission is [mission name].”

This isn’t my normal gaming style, but it’s something I can see myself playing to pass the time.
