Despite the appearance, the game has very little to do with chess, and what does map to chess is tutorialized in game. So if you don't know how to play chess, don't worry about it.

It's a fine puzzle game. I haven't found it very hard, and some of it felt a bit like fodder, but some levels are particularly satisfying. It's very short, sadly.

I wish I could have paid a little bit more for a version of this game with more puzzles and quality of life features, like the ability to fast forward and rewind individual moves. The sequel seems to have that feature in some form, I haven't checked it out at time of review.

I'll spare you the comments about how unfair this game is, and the discussion about whether trial and error makes for good game design. If you're considering buying this game then this is probably something you want.

Some traps were pretty clever, and figuring out the more puzzley ones was satisfying. Others were ripped straight from Syobon Action (or Cat Mario) so if you've played that you'll see them coming a mile away.

However the controls are a huge problem. Eryi controls like a bar of soap mounted on springs. She's floaty and slippery and jumps too high or too low, and while I eventually got the hang of her it just wasn't fun. I cannot recommend a platformer with sloppy controls when Super Meat Boy had already been out for years when this released.
