Challenging but fun, the title is very accurate! I grew up on NFS but this is just as fun, and far more satisfying to smash up cars in. Controller bindings need some work and I wish the multiplayer was more modern, rather than relying on port-forwarding, but singleplayer this game is loads of fun.

I started playing this game again after a couple of years and I've already put in 10 hours over 2 days.


This game is digital crack.

It's Half Life with a mix of more modern ideas and standards. I remember when this was still called Black Mesa:Source, think I played it in 2012, and 9 years on, the Black Mesa chapters still hold up, with some very needed changes from the source material while still staying faithful.

The Xen chapters, however, are really where this game shines. Taking what was a bland, somewhat desolate slog with awkward controls in the original game, the CC team have all but remade Xen from the ground up, bringing us possibly the most beautiful alien environment to date. Even Interloper, which is by far the weakest chapter in both this and the original, is far superior to it's 1998 counterpart.

If someone were to give me this game and tell me that this were Valve's attempt at a remake, I would believe them. Well done, Crowbar Collective, you remade a classic game so well that it has not only surpassed the original, it could in fact be considered as the definitive Half Life experience for new fans.

I have over 2000 hours across collective versions of this game, but I still haven't completed the Companion's questline.

Maybe I will in another 2000 hours, maybe I won't?
