Herman Webster Mudgett, or Dr.H.H.Holmes was America's first infamous serial killer. Dr. Holmes terrorized Chicago during the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893 with his infamous and deadly 100 room murder mansion. Holmes posed his Mansion as a Hotel and customized rooms for his murderous ways. He customized his rooms with gas chambers, acid vats, lime pits, torture rooms and others. He used many different building contractors while it was being built so Holmes was the only one to know its true layout. Holmes confessed to a total body count of 27, Nine of which were confirmed. But Holmes' body count is believed to be higher. Holmes would sell the skeletons of his victims to schools for a large profit. He also participated in insurance fraud and was very wealthy. In 1894, one of Holmes old cell mates (to whom he did not pay a promised bribe) turned Holmes in which led to his capture and execution. While he was incarcerated, his mansion was burned down. In 1896, Holmes was convicted of 9 counts of murder and sentenced to hanging.Until the moment of his death, Holmes remained calm and amiable, showing very few signs of fear, anxiety or depression. Holmes' neck did not snap immediately; he instead died slowly, twitching over 15 minutes before being pronounced dead 20 minutes after the trap was sprung. Today Dr.H.H.Holmes is known as America's First Serial Killer.
