It gets an undeserved bad rap, there are certainly issues with DS2. Like repeating textures, confusing geography, wonky hitboxes (for PvP), and lower boss quality compared to the other 2 games. But DS2 is ambitious, it strives to make new additions to the Dark Souls series such as new weapon classes, power-stancing, many new armor, weapons, spells, and stories; more DLC content, and secrets. In my opinion, the positives out-weigh the negatives. If the connectivity were a bit more polished and if DS2 had more time in the development phase, it would easily be the best Dark Souls game and probably my favorite action RPG.
