A beautiful community driven game with some great shooting mechanics.

UPDATE: Now that CS:GO is gone and CS2 is here and is a hellscape of awful mechanics, bugs, and cheaters, I'm returning to CS:S. The best Counter-Strike ever made. Pretty much everything about it feels so crisp, even in 2024.

This is a wonderful, beautiful game. Especially the online mode. It's filled with modders. who are sometimes good, and mostly bad, but that's okay, because you can make friends, and add them on Social Club, and start an invite only session. You can steal, buy, and modify cars. You can kill a prostitute. You can kill yourself. You can play darts. You can fly around in a golden delorean. You can spend hours finding a car, and then have it appear everywhere you go. You can own a business. You can do drugs. It's one of the most open ended "sandbox" games I've ever seen and played. You can pretend you're a southerner and go up north (weird I know). You can pretend you're some mob boss guy and get dressed in a suit with some friends and go around assassinating others for money. You can pretty much do anything. It's truly one of the best games ever, and I think anybody can have fun in it.

Too many cheaters and the developers aren't doing anything effective.

It's not a bad game but the garbage cheater-filled playerbase is what makes it bad. Don't waste your money on this game until something is done about cheaters.

UPDATE 21 NOVEMBER 2017: More cheaters than before, but at least we have new skins and rank emblems!

UPDATE 26 JUNE 2019: CS:GO is free to play now. There are even more cheaters than before. We have even more skins and ranks are even more messed up now.

UPDATE 5 FEBRUARY 2021: FACEIT Premium and ESEA has more "legit cheaters" than ranked matchmaking, which is hilarious. The anticheat in the game has gotten better, but there are still cheaters in about half the matches I play, sometimes less, sometimes more. Skins have taken over the game basically. Because of the high skin activity, the inventory servers are down very often. I still love this game, but until the cheater problem is dealt with, I can't give it a positive rating.

UPDATE 29 OCTOBER 2021: Still full of cheaters. Exceedingly rare to get a match without at least one. I think nothing will ever be done. Counter-Strike is THE best competitive shooter out there, but it's dying. The only part of this game that's still relatively alive is e-sports, and even there cheaters sometimes pop up. If an invasive anti-cheat were introduced, I would play this non-stop. Don't waste your money on this game, whether it's on Prime or on skins. Skins are used for money laundering.

UPDATE 14 NOVEMBER 2021: Multiple cheaters in every single ranked match. I'm parting ways with this game. I never wanted to leave, but it's unplayable. 10 years since release, and we still have this problem. Unacceptable.

UPDATE 18 MAY 2023: Still cheaters. Screw this game.

UPDATE 27 OCT 2023: CS2 has been out for about a month. Still cheaters.

UPDATE 1 JUL 2024: You'll find less cheaters on Tinder.

UPDATE 4 OCT 2024: We got gun charms and a battlepass. I would call this an official abandoning of the core game. Instead of focusing on fixing the broken fundamentals like subtick movement and shooting, and adding a real anticheat (THE ONLY THING THAT WOULD MAKE THIS GAME WORTH PLAYING EVEN IF THERE WERE NO OTHER UPDATES), Valve focuses on adding money-making content in hopes that the userbase will be STUPID enough to give them more money after they forcefully ripped CS:GO from our steam libraries. I believe everyone who cares should change their reviews to negative until something is done. It's sad to see my favorite game die like this.
