Early Access Review
Definitely still early access (some placeholder art, a good bit of the story yet to come) but feature complete and, well, it's Supergiant. They haven't missed yet.

This game will waste your time, spend it somewhere else.

The combat is very simple, but most of the game is spent walking (very slowly) back to bad platforming, like a jump over one-hit-kill spikes to a moving platform that you can't see until you've committed to the jump. It's a shame because the art is wonderful and the atmosphere is great, but the gameplay is just the worst kind of tedious. Whether you're here for a metroidvania fix or a soulslike one, this ain't it.

Delightful game! Wonderful atmosphere, great music and art, and the gameplay of running around juggling different systems as you go is just engaging enough without getting in the way too much. The platforming inside the vehicle can get a little finnicky at times but that issue is small potatoes. Definitely something you can run through in one (fairly meaty) sitting, but well worth it and extra length would likely just be unnecessary padding and take away from the game. Definitely recommend, and I can't wait to see what these folks make next.

Turns out the developers are bigoted, spineless, and homophobic. The game itself doesn't really live up to the hype, either. Give it a miss.

Seemed promising, but abilities are doled out via loot boxes so you won't get access to most of the powers that get used on you. Upgrades unlocked through spending in-game currency are straight upgrades, so a beginner will just have a worse ship than someone who's played longer, and the player base isn't big enough to match similar ranks.

I should probably start by noting that this game has a healthy spoonful of that Bethesda Jank, but good lord does it make up for it.

I loved Fallout 4 as a non-VR game, but this is a whole other level. I hear you can port your save over if you want but I decided to start fresh, and I've been re-exploring areas I remember as well as finding places I never got around to visiting. Playing a full-length and fully-featured game in VR is astounding. Seeing the world at life scale is Fantastic!

I never played the original release, so this was my first Rez experience. Straightforward to learn the mechanics, and just sort of visually and auditorially overwhelming in the best possible way. I'm guessing the game was balanced with the assumption that you're playing with a controller, and that VR makes it very easy- but it's more about the music and the visuals anyways. If you have a VR headset and any sort of interest in EDM, this is well worth the money and the time.

I was really excited for this game as someone who really loves metroidvanias, but the backtracking in this game is some of the worst I've seen in the genre. It doesn't add difficulty, just tedium and time wasting. If you play, play with a guide, I guess...

[edit] Sounds like they'll be adding some sort of fast-travel with the first DLC, perhaps that'll sort it out. I'd love to play more of the game but I'm tired of slogging through the same areas over and over to see if I missed something while trying to figure out where to go.

[edit again] I was looking over my past reviews and startled to see that I gave this game a thumbs down at some point. I must've been really mad about something at the time, I guess. I take it back!

Neat concept! Very light on content, but there's a lot of promise in the premise.

The arm/hand IK stuff is pretty neat, but then they put it on a "waves of enemies in a room" game. Pass.
