I don't know why everybody pretends that this game is good. The gameplay is ok at best and the story is full of stupid plot holes that are disguised as "its so deep because its complicated". Dont waste your time

Polytopia is a wonderful game for anybody who wants a short, fun experience either alone or with a group of friends. I cannot recommend this game enough. I loved it on mobile and I love it even more on PC.

Synopsis:
Polytopia is a turn based strategy game where you manage a small tribe trying to conquer the world. You can grow your tribe through managing your resources and interacting with the environment around you. Be careful, though, as the other tribes of the land have the same goal as you. Conquer cities and grow your kingdom through battle strategy and strategic management of your skill tree.

Pros:

+ Very fun character designs, each tribe having their own design, some based on real cultures, adds a feel of diversity to the different tribes that, for the most part, aren't super different

+ Likewise, the land that your tribe claims will change as well, giving a good visual display of progression

+ Resources are condensed into one type (Stars) that are used for everything. If resource management isn't your thing, this game is for you

+ Extremely re-playable. Given the nature of the game, it's different every time you play and the AI will always have tricks up its sleeve to beat you down, even if you think you're doing well.

+ Easy to pick up and drop. If you want to play for five minutes, there's nothing stopping you. Open up the game and make a move in-between work calls or just play throughout the day. The game will always be waiting for you.

+ Great with friends. The multiplayer is even better than the single player. The AI is good but it isn't perfect. You can play with a maximum of 13 player controlled tribes per game and that many people all using human logic is bound to be a fun time. Especially seeing how the more cities you conquer, the more powerful you get, it makes the game great as friendly competition between pals. My friends and I used to have Polytopia matches on mobile almost every day and the tension was great. I highly recommend this game if you have a group you can play it with. Maybe you can use it for some kind of bracket or decision making.

Neutral

= The learning curve can be slightly complicated your first few games. There's definitely a meta and strategies that work more than others and learning how everything works together but it comes to you after practice

= The core tribes are essentially the exact same and have access to all of the same abilities at some point because they all share an identical tech tree. The only difference is what ability is unlocked at the start. This might be a negative if that weren't a solid mechanic for the type of game this is. Having different starting abilities can drastically change your chances of winning and some pose more and less of a challenge than others. It's not a drawback but don't expect each one to be vastly different.

= The screen can feel a bit cluttered at times.

= There are three tribes that actually DO have their own unique skills, abilities and quirks however they are behind a DLC paywall. This isn't a problem to me because I think the developers deserve the money. The amount of fun that I've been getting out of this game for years makes me want to give them the extra money.

= (I'll return to this review to talk about online multiplayer when the playerbase expands. I tried joining a game and it took about 5 minutes to fill up, only to have one player afk at the tribe choosing screen.)

Negatives

- Going back to my point about DLC tribes, they are a TINY bit pricey but again, it's worth it for optional content. Even though the Polaris Tribe can be a bit overpowered in multiplayer games, a good strategy with any of the core tribes will still be able to push them back.

- Can get slightly repetitive when playing alone but harder difficulty offsets it.

I cannot stress the enough. PLEASE buy this game. It's great and it deserves to get bigger and more known. The developers have been doing an amazing job keeping it going for years and I imagine it'll only get better from here. They deserve your money and they deserve more recognition. I hope to see you guys on the battlefield someday.

This game is a prime example of why steam needs a review in between good and bad. While this game has a lot of potential, it is really hard to learn and has framerate issues on my machine

PROS:

+ Neat concept

+ Nice design

CONS:

- Clunky gameplay
- Frustrating to learn

5/10

EDIT: Someone from the team reached out to help me with my issues. I realized that my review may have been a tad harsh since the issues seem to be with my machine only.

Back in 2016, I left a positive review for this game, saying that it was one of my favourites on the platform. As of now, I've deleted that review.

I genuinely dont understand how it's so impossible for Valve to fix the bot issue plaguing this game. Joining a lobby thats actually playable is almost impossible and finding a game that isn't infested with sniper instakill bots is a miracle. Hopefully one day Valve will do something about this issue but for now, I can't in good faith say that this is a good experience.

This game is really fantastic for people who like old style RPGs. As the description says, I would not recommend this to anyone who has no patience as the game is mostly grinding.
