If you're a new player reading this and you're interested in playing the older Silent Hill games: DO IT.

There's a post on the /r/silenthill subreddit on the best ways to play the old games (you'll find it through Google easily).

This remake is really good, but it lacks some of the essence of what made the original game special. It's not necessarily the developer's fault - the OG Silent Hill 2 is the definition of lightning in a bottle. It was a product of it's (technical) limitations at the time and that's part of what makes it so charming. The ending performance of Monica Taylor Horgan (Mary/Maria) alone is a big reason to play the original. That's why I advise you to experience the original game(s) first hand.

This remake doesn't replace the original Silent Hill 2 - they both co-exist with another.

This game has gotten a lot of undeserved hate in the past few years. Granted, the main story isn't on the same level of Human Revolution (thanks to cut content), but it ups the ante in every single other aspect compared to HR. The gameplay has improved massively and is really smooth, the hub world is actually interesting, has lots of environmental storytelling/optional content and the side quests are excellent (especially the Harvester questline). The 'A Criminal Past' DLC is also a worthy and interesting addition to the game that puts it's focus on the stealth mechanics.

If you are unsure if you should play this, pick this (and Human Revolution, if you haven't played it) up when it goes on sale and give it a chance.
