Give me more Rock On! Island. I want 800 hours of Rock On! Island. There are other great games in here, with something for almost everyone who ever played NES-era games. But I just want more Rock On! Island.

I really like beat 'em ups, and especially ones that are based on properties that were popular during my childhood. This one is not so great. Hit detection is rough, controls are a little too simple and twitchy, and enemies have that traditional quarter munching behavior with several being ranged attack spammers that come in swarms. It's not an incompetent game but it's definitely one that has way too many rough edges when we have modern versions of these types of games like Streets of Rage 4 and TMNT Shredder's Revenge to compare it against.

By stage 8 I found myself aggravated there were 4 more levels to go for an ending and the possibility of character unlocks, at which point I also realized I didn't care to keep going to the end for character unlocks. This isn't a bad game necessarily, but it's pretty mediocre in the genre and isn't especially high on the nostalgia angle since out of a veritable toybox of options, you'll fight about a dozen enemy types. People have been asking for a middle option for games between yes/no recommendation and that is specifically for games like this.

The best game I can't play.

When you get in, it's amazing. They'll fix the server hell we all live in. Come back and buy the game in March. You won't miss out on the warbonds (season pass) because they don't expire. No Fomo, light cash shop with visuals only, and a fun game. I'm only aggravated that I can't play when I want due to server issues.

I have not experienced the online co-op issues many are reporting. I have played mostly singleplayer and some co-op over the internet utilizing Parsec without any issues in that regard. This game satisfies a simple 2D zelda-esque itch pretty well. Playing it co-op make sit much more interesting as you run around with your friends through the overworld and dungeons with a generally bright and clean art style tying everything together. I do think the game is well worth the cost overall and recommend it for a reasonably fun 2-4 player game if you're doing couch or steam remote play/parsec co-op. That said, I have a few small criticisms.

1. All the classes are sword wielders. Magic user, witch, thief, ranger. You're using a sword as your go-to weapon. Your class may modify a sub-weapon when you unlock it but those subweapons require ammo or mana to use and just are overall weaker than swinging the sword as a high damage melee class.
2. After the first dungeon, the second dungeon is comparatively difficult to get to. You'll be doing a lot of quests back and forth to and from a swamp to town to get items and leads on where to go next until you finally manage to do some minor dungeons to get to the next big dungeon/shrine. This is okay, but it's very different from all but walking out the first gate of town into the first dungeon, so the pacing is a bit off in that regard.
3. The subweapons are unlocked pretty quickly for some, and obtusely for others. You'll get a wand, boomerang (you never use this in my experience) and bomb pretty quickly. Other stuff will take longer and you never really need those items outside of the grappling hook which is required for puzzles. Need a bomb for a puzzle? The game provides unlimited bombs nearby, so why get bombs on your own?
4. Incremental leveling and shop building. You have to spend your gems to unlock shops and homes in town, opening quests and upgrade trees. Unfortunately, you're going to be farming a TON of gems. Upgrades are in the realm of 1-10 points of things early on, like 1 sword damage or 5 health. You unlock more trees for higher amounts of these things but the upgrade trees are very flat and plain and not at all entertaining. You aren't getting new abilities so much as getting 0.5% better with each unlock.

Do NOT purchase if you want to play online co-op. Online co-op stopped working for me and my bro about two weeks ago and there are others in the discussion threads listing the same issue. Some have had it since launch. No amount of troubleshooting resolves this from a user side as it appears to be a server issue from what can be gathered. Supermassive has not acknowledged this at all, to my knowledge, despite Steam discussions being full of this issue. I'll update this if they fix it, I guess. Or maybe I won't acknowledge it if it's ever corrected, since that's the company stance.

A combo of repetition and minor but inaccurate RNG make this a no-go at the time of this writing.

Every mission in the first chapter was travel through 3-4 jump gates to the same locations with enemies spawning at each one that you clear then move to the next to repeat. You're grinding these missions to get xp for your crew to get abilities and gear for them and your ship but no upgrade feels like it matters outside of more power for your ship and crew abilities you get just for grinding.

RNG is messy here. Even when you have your ship power set to high engines and go defensive, you'll find your ship being hit at 100% dodge. Similarly, you can use 'focus fire' on your gunners and their accuracy will jump to 100% and you'll watch EVERY short miss anyway. Is this 100% then checked against a dodge calculation on the enemies? Maybe so, but the game has no information on that. Also, that means the 30% hit chance you may have on a non gunner manning a turret becomes what, 5-10%? So why bother putting anyone on a station at all in that circumstance? Secondary skill spec will let you add gunner to other roles as they level up, but then you can't necessarily have a backup engineer or other roles just so you can have that 100% miss chance. The math is too vague from a user perspective for an RNG game, and you're expected to manually juggle all defensive and offensive systems at the same time you're repelling possible boarders and putting out fires. You cannot increase your crew amount to help with this, either.

On top of these things, we've got bugs where the pilot will be on defensive to move the ship to rotate shields in front of enemy shots but will just fly a straight path while someone behind the ship rips through the shields without any evasion taken. The front turret is all but useless on the ship and the rear is highly overvalued based on enemy movements. You'll have about 50% combat uptime on the sides, 90% on rear and 10% on front in my experience.

Conceptually it's neat, and I had an entertaining couple of hours before the grind and vague nature of how things work in the game became more annoyance than not. It could be great later on though, so I'll try it again after a few months maybe and see how it is.

This is a bad game at this point. I've given it a fair bit of time and it's released about a month ago now. It is still buggy as could be with occasional crashes but mostly just not registering hits, not allowing ranged weapon draws, dodges not registering, and basically anything you would imagine out of an early access indie game. The controls are a floaty mess, and your companions will regularly knock things away from your planned ranged attacks and super moves just as you finish a harrowing battle with the resistant camera to aim your damn lasers and rocks where you want them.

The campaign is so-so but the grinding mess you play afterward is just awful. Enemies will come in overpowered swarms that spam attacks from all directions to a point they cannot be avoided even when you are ONLY spamming dodges to try and go revive your awful AI teammates if you dare play solo. And don't worry, random robots can definitely one-shot the hulk if he dares wander into a +5 difficulty mission which you need to get gear to grind to the next tier to...repeat the exact same mission that is now +5 difficulty harder?

I'll check it out again in 3-6 months just because I want to play a marvel game, I guess. Maybe it will have day one bugs finally fixed by then.
