My friend and I used to play Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and Champions: Return to Arms for PS2 in our childhood. That same friend graciously got me this game so we could relive our past and play the titular series once more. Those games were a bit different than its "successor," as the gameplay was more akin to a real-time hack 'n slash ARPG, more like Diablo with local multiplayer. I never played the true predecessor titles BG1 and 2.

So far, Baldur's Gate 3 has been an exceptional experience for me, as someone new to DnD and CRPGs, I had quite a steep learning curve when I first started the game. I find the classes and in game choices to be extremely malleable, the variety in potential actions and outcome possibilities while using the game mechanics to your advantage are what make this game truly shine. Although the game is extremely story driven, you are given a generous amount of autonomy in the general progression of your grand adventure.

Even though the game mechanics left a good impression on me, I feel the character creation and crafting options leave much to be desired. Face options, hair styles, body types, etc. are all based on preset values and are not on a sliding scale like most other RPG titles. Despite the fact that there's a crafting system and forges/anvils, there aren't any weapon smithing options and a very narrow selection of combustible items available to be created.

Suffice it to say, this game certainly deserves Game of the Year award. This has been one of the most enjoyable experiences I've had in many, many years. I believe this title is a great time investment in terms of recreation, and you wouldn't regret purchasing it for the full price. You may end up putting a significant amount of time into this game and get a great return on value.

The Total War series peaked when Shogun 2 came out. All the new titles don't even compare. Sure, the scope and setting are rather small, there isn't much cultural variety, and there are some bugs here and there, but it really polished a lot of the mechanics and ideas from earlier titles. The Fall of the Samurai DLC has amazing naval and gunpowder battles, something that was slightly lacking in comparison to Empire and Napoleon (both of which do it very well, but FotS did it better). This is no in depth review, I just love this game, and I'm disappointed that I can't play it anymore due to the new patch. It also stinks that there wasn't another TW game with the mechanics Shogun 2 and earlier titles have. The OGs know what I'm talking about.
