This game is a masterpiece. Easily one of the most underrated games out there.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5 offers a phenomenal combat system. The combat system offers so much depth that even after 60-70 hours of playtime, I was still discovering new strategies and how I can abuse certain equipment or take advantage of certain status effects. I especially love how new equipment is not necessarily better than older equipment. This means that each piece of equipment shines depending on both the scenario and how you use it, allowing you to constantly change up your strategy and experiment with new gear as you play. I also love the many ways you can abuse certain status effects to your advantage. Whether its setting up massive damage combos or healing from an otherwise dangerous DoT effect, there is so much that you can do in this game and I love that. The enemy design in this game is fantastic as well. Enemies in this game, too, can abuse status effects; in fact, this is often how you learn to use status effects to your advantage! A lot of the enemies in this game, especially on Epic difficulty (which I highly recommend if you enjoy difficult turn-based RPGs), have smart AI and will ALSO set up massive damage combos with status effects. This, combined with the wide variety of enemies you face throughout the game, often forces you to critically rethink your strategy after a difficult encounter. The bosses are also a highlight of the game. The superbosses this game offers are some of the best and most memorable bosses I have fought in any game. I love the way each boss forces you to evaluate and change your play style. Overall, phenomenal combat system that constantly forces you to rethink your strategy and learn from encounters.

I'd also like to point out the game's puzzle design. There are various puzzles scattered throughout the game that were all satisfying to solve. Although the puzzles are relatively simple in design, most of them require a decent amount of thought and I thoroughly enjoyed solving each and every one. Very simple yet effective puzzles (especially the ones in the dungeons, loved those). Additionally, the sheer number of secrets and secret codes found throughout the game are really cool. I loved going back to an older area and discovering something I had completely missed my first time through! The music of this game is also really good and I still have some of the battle themes stuck in my head. None of the tracks in this game ever got old despite its 90+ hour runtime!

tl;dr phenomenal combat system, great enemy and boss design, satisfying puzzles, good soundtrack, LOTS of content. 10/10, one of the best games I have ever played. Probably my new 2nd favorite game! Highly recommend for anyone interested in turn-based RPGs.
