Wow, what a great game that holds up. I played it in upscaled 1080p (4K) and it's just beautiful on modern hardware and performs great.

Mark Hamill is the star of the show. His Joker narration drives the game forward and keeps you sucked in. And of course Batman's actor from the animated series is also here and is the consistent rock that anchors Joker's insanity. The immersion backed up by the fantastic "free flowing" combat system. I played the game on Normal but there is also Hard mode for those that feel it needs more challenge. I would even say this combat system is still better (in my opinion) that the Shadow of Mordor / Shadow of War that adopted it, if you've played those games. It's just a bit more streamlined and tighter feeling (but not as many moves). A lot of villains make an appearance and they are each satisfyingly portrayed.

Don't expect a superb boss fight for each villain; some are represented more as threats to deal with in other ways than in direct combat. It's more about the immersion, there.

Endless Space 2 is my favorite 4X space game.

Unfortunately, this expansion introduces issues that are egregious enough to shake my faith in future content for this product. It introduces late game content in the early game that one player (only one) is guaranteed to receive to wield against any other player they choose. An analogy to this expansion would be if Firaxis put out an expansion for Civ VI where a at the beginning of the medieval era, an alien race from the future appeared and asked for worship. The civ that offers the most faith points gets to pick a reward from four things: a painting, some cows, a spy, or a tank. In the medieval era. That's what this expansion does.

There are some counter-points to this:
1) A clever player can avoid this fleet of death with high movement
2) They've patched the fleet to slightly reduce its power

However, the issue isn't so much that the AI will crush the player with this fleet, but the reverse. The AI simply cannot stop a player from picking and choosing any one opponent to wipe from their home system from the game, early on.

I can only imagine that Amplitude moved a new team over to handle closing out this game's support, but boy is this a sour note to end on*.

If I didn't love the Endless games so much, I wouldn't be this disappointed. It's really a shame on Amplitude to be unwilling to admit this was a poor choice. I can only imagine the incredulity of the testers who must have tried to warn the lead developer who approved it. Edit: I've put over 20 hours into the game with this expansion enabled. I don't know why Steam says "0 hours".

* Update 9-29: It turns out my instincts were correct. This DLC was outsourced to another studio. My faith in Amplitude is restored, and hopefully Sega / Amplitude will be more careful in the future about who they outsource major content releases to.

Warning: Do not buy this game, it's broken and unsupported.

I just came back to this game after a long hiatus, and played the single player campaign from the beginning. I was noticing that I wasn't gaining an XP from missions (it acted as if I failed all my objectives but completed the mission). I read some stuff online and it seemed like maybe not that big of a deal since it only affects unit upgrades.

After playing three hours and beating over a dozen campaign missions, I decided to call it quits for the night. When I went to the main campaign menu is when I discovered that it had not saved any of my progress. None of the missions counted as completed and the game now requires me to start the campaign all over again.

So unless you have enough hours to play through the campaign in one sitting without gaining any unit upgrades, you probably should steer clear. Otherwise I would have recommended the game.

Great looking remaster of Commandos 2. One of Eidos all time greatest published games IMHO. I haven't encountered any of the bugs yet that some folks are running into; having a great time! Maybe I'll write up a real review of the game. I should mention at least that the controls are very old-school: right click to select your units, left click for actions.

This is a fantastic concept. Really a lot of love put into crafting this experience, and what's there is very well done. However, for the extremely short amount of campaign content, $25 is asking too much. The game is currently the poster child for what is both right and wrong with VR: solid implementation of minimal content. I would recommend this game, except that I can't continue to recommend VR games that charge too much.

Warning: This game no longer works.

You can play the training mission and then the game will place you in 5 matches vs AI to "rank" you. Then, it will mysteriously break. There are 4 Combat modes: PvP, Co-op vs AI, Join custom match, and Start custom match. All of those options result in "Battle not found" no matter what I do. It's like the game can connect to servers but they have blocked of actual matches.

The game looked amazing! I had crazy fun during the tutorial ranking. But sadly it looks like all the matchmaking servers are down, including whatever would allow you to just play vs the AI, making the game unplayable. Biggest frustration for me of the year. I have reported this game to Steam, but buyer beware.

Update: In someone else's review I saw mention of linking your Steam account to Valkyrie account. I went to their website and figured out how to do this. Suddenly I can get _some_ of the game modes working. I can't tell if this is related for sure or if the matchmaking is just that spotty. I will update this review if it turns out to have solved my issue. Of note: nothing in the game told me I needed to create a Valkyrie account on the web and link it to my Steam account. I wouldn't have figured this out if it wasn't for someone else's negative review!

An Age of Conan vs Ark Comparison Review By a New Player

This review is going to be huge. I am new to both games (level 50 in Ark's island - just started playing last week) and will review each portion of the game as I experience them.

TLDR
Round 1 goes to Ark
I can't decide yet if Conan is a recommendation but I have no reason to down-vote it at this time.

Details Below

Round 1: Earliest Game

Conan Pros:
- More polished (AAA feeling)
- Prettier
- Better performance
- More interesting man vs man combat
More weapons, weapons styles and attacks, etc - a whole system ark doesn't have!

Ark Pros:
- Variety
Much more flora and Fauna. I feel like I'm in an alive world more in this game. Note that I am not using mods that add more.
- Exploration
You begin with a map that you must fill out yourself as a player (fog of war) with the option to even turn of your indicator to truly have to find your bearings in the wild, making a compass a must-craft tool. This is hugely compelling and makes me want to explore. It also has the effect of making the world feel larger. In Conan I can see everywhere I can visit right from the beginning. Conan automatically labels things on your map, while in Ark you must use latitude and longitude to place pins on your map, giving it a much more immersive feel that you are struggling to control a world that is quite wild and unforgiving.
- Survival
Temperature and food have more of an immediate effect in Ark. You might spawn with no berries nearby; the nearest source having compies or dilophosaurs or worse in your way to have to figure out how to get around. And even then berries only provide so much nourishment and you must figure out a better solution fairly soon. Maybe fishing with a spear? What about dangerous creatures staying by the lakes?
- Darker Nights
Nights are pitch black. Not only are torches required but they also don't save you as you still can only see several yards out. Conan nights don't even require a torch.
- Level Design
Right off the bat there are hard controls on where you can go in Ark based on lakes and rivers, mountains etc creating choke points into new areas. The player needs to plan ahead on how to engage upon an expedition to successfully break through these areas. Conan has a very open map, and in the early game I can easily bypass and avoid any encounter I don't want to engage in. I'm eager to see this change in Conan as I continue play. Obviously at higher levels in Ark you can acquire things that make exploration easier.

Wash:
- Difficulty of Enemies
Both games feature very difficult enemies that can easily end your life from the beginning.
- Climbing
Conan features Breath of the Wild style climbing. I am on the fence about it. While it is hella fun, it also makes bypassing challenges easier, which is something I would hate to have been able to do in Ark's early game, which I love. Also, from what I can tell there is no balancing mechanic like rain or the possibility to slip while you climb. And you can climb quite high distances from the outset of the game.

Round 1 Summary: It goes to Ark, but Conan is no slouch at what it does well. Ark is clearly more geared toward me personally, but we'll see how Conan progresses in the next stage. The emotive impacts of Ark's greater variety of wildlife and biomes even in the early game has a very big impact on the immersiveness. But the real kicker is the exploration aspects, which so far are winning me over the combat focused gameplay of Conan.

I love adventure games, and I really wanted to like this. The voice acting is good, especially for a small company, and the graphics are exactly what I was looking for; charming and evocative. The setting is intriguing.

But the dialogue sequences are just too long. Eventually the amount of dialogue I had to slog through to get to puzzles were so long I was exhausted. So bear this in mind. I love reading novels, but when it comes to adventure games I want more gameplay. I may give it another crack in the future, now that I'm prepared for it.

What is awesome about this game:
- One of the more moody and atmospheric medieval games out there, where you rule some villagers among dark forests and foggy banks that really feel like your new dangerous home
- Extremely simple to jump into
- Open sandbox: you must explore and learn how the world's logic works on your own (experiment to try and unravel the puzzles). DON'T let anyone spoil the game for you if this is a game feature you like
- Exemplary use of graphical style and music

Those things combined create a formula for the most immersive medieval game I've played in a long time.

What some folks might not like:
- Although a procedural game, it's not the "infinitely replayable" variety where there are massive combinations of random content. There is a point when you've explored everything to offer and most probably won't consider it replayable past that. This isn't a flaw, I just mention it because some folks have specific expectations for procedural games.
- I understand that there is no plot that reveals more about the mystery of the islands, although I haven't played far enough to confirm
- You don't have 100% control. You must learn how your villagers behave and adapt your strategy around it. You can't undo mistakes, and you must live (more likely die) from them and learn for the next ruler.
- Anyone who must have a wiki or hint guide to complete games is probably the opposite of who this was intended for, since a feature of the game is learning its mechanics through experimental trial and error. There will be times where you are faced with a decision and you won't have enough information to know the right choice. I personally like that in this game since I think they have the mechanics to support this style well. You feel like it's the tragic story of that ruler's failed reign.

A few are complaining about the price / content ratio. I spent enough hours (LOVING it) that I feel it was worth the $15. I believe most of these folks had incorrect expectations that the game would be more replayable. It's not that style of game.

Note that although this is also a mobile game, I prefer it on a bigger screen and speakers for the atmosphere. It's not some desparate port.

WARNING: If you read hints/spoilers you will negative impact the best this game has to offer. Be careful what reviews you read.

This is a great game. If you like the idea of RTS, but don't like the super fast twitch gameplay that requires you to have a certain number of "actions per mniute" to feel like you're being successful, this might be the game for you.

*First, I want to address UPlay. I've been playing this game recently and UPlay with it works great. I've had no issues (Oct 2015) even though this game is so old. I had to contact Ubisoft because I bought this so long ago it was apparently registered to an old account of mine. Their customer service let me know the account name, and I logged and was able to play since I remembered the password. So, thanks to their customer service I didn't have to re-buy this gem. New buyers obviously won't have this problem anyway.*

This game is a nice mix of "casual, but deep". The setting is fairly light-hearted and casual, but the game is by no means easy if you ramp up the difficulty! It has a very satisfying campaign, but skirmish modes are where the real replayability is. You can adjust maps and scenarios to your hearts content to make for some really interesting matches. Much more customizable than any other RTS I know. Additionally, you can design how your own castle on the map looks for your skirmish or multplayer games.

I couldn't recommend this game more. It's too bad people feel the need to rip on a fantastic game because their ideology is against UPlay requirements. But that's what it is. If you take that into account, you'll notice that this game doesn't actually get mixed reviews from the people who take the time to actually review it; it gets great reviews (and looks how many years later!).
