I usually just stick with the auto update. It's just less of a hassle to me. With me it just asks if I want to restart steam right away or just wait until I log in next. Steam's never had troubles updating for me, maybe turning on auto update would help?

Steam is being really dumb with me lately. I think It wants to update itself, but i set it so it does not auto update. Usually Steam updates itself after I log into it, but only after a million tries.
