Early Access Review
I love this game.

An incredible selection of songs, possibly the best track selection I've ever seen in a game. So many obscure artists with excellent tunes, alongside some fantastic originals from peeps, and the general song selection is really high quality.

The bumper mechanic, while I kinda wish it had a real timing window than crit or miss, can be pretty fun to read, and fit in really naturally with typical 4k patterns and can even add their own reading challenge at times.

The story, while it didn't initially hook me, really got going once the end of the first chapter came around. And the story ties in loads of the game's secrets in a lovely little package. It's great, and I'd write all about it if I didn't care about spoiling the entire game for people reading the reviews.

The quality of some of the earlier-in-development charts isn't quite as good as some of the later ones admittedly, but there's definitely some really awesome modcharts going on throughout the story and the game's alternate game modes, that are generally just really fun when combined with the game's general visual aesthetic, which is absolutely my cup of tea.

This game is not without flaw.

The game does have a fairly sizeable amount of bugs, which is admittedly relatively inevitable in a constantly-updating free indie game made by a team running off of nothing, and they do get fixed relatively quickly as they come and go.

The timing windows feel way too lenient even on rice notes (which are the only hit objects that have all five of the game's awardable judgements), though I kinda understand why the game is like that.

The game's performance can be patchy from time to time, and while my own computer is kinda weak, I've had friends suffering from semi-frequent stutters on brand new i7+4070 equipped computers, so it's not just me. GameMaker moment ig.

The main complaint I have, however, that seems to be a recurring theme with negative reviews I see here, is accessibility:

reduced motion/lights does not always do what you'd expect it to do, gameplay customisation aside from scroll speed, naff keysound options and autoplay, is limited to randomised difficulty increasing mods given at random in a separate, grindy-at-times gamemode, and working out what to do in secret areas can feel like a chore that requires looking things up rather than a fun challenge occasionally. Also, the derivative works policy, while I don't have a problem with it in and of itself, can only be found on the devs' discord server, and the game's separate song usage policy is available neither here nor in game, and must be found on the devs' social media, buried either through dozens or tweets or deep in one of several announcements channels.

Also I guess I don't know how I feel about the rating system, lol. But i kinda suck at vsrg anyway so who am i to talk about it

But, aside from the accessibility, these negative points feel like real nitpicks. Overall this game is really, really good, especially for the story and original tracks, and for the low low price of zero dollar, I'd say it's well worth your time.

Fantastic little game. Not especially balanced or replayable game-play wise to a veteran of deck builders (not terrible either) but man is it a great time anyway. Amazing soundtrack, heartfelt and funny plot, gorgeous art.

Worth full price.

Excellent game that I should have got to playing earlier. However, achievements don't seem to be working at all, not sure why...

An excellent standalone expansion but you're better off playing this alongside all the other Slay the Spire mods on the standard ModTheSpire launcher. I want my friend mod damnit :< uni the cat tax below

So, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, much better than Grid 2. Only problem is that the steering wheel sync is really fiddly with this game, and it is definitely better to get Project Cars/assetto Corsa if considering full price. On a sale, however, an absolute bargain.

Why have I not made a review of this before? Maybe because I'm too busy rocking out...

EDIT: adult me coming in here to say this game massively fell off over the years. Gameplay is completely different to when I first reviewed this and not in a good way. Filled to the brim with minimally impactful micro-DLC and just generally not that great of a time anymore.

It's a cheap game with some fun levelling, enemy-ass-kicking action. And it's cool in co-op mode. Delivers enough for the price.

This game feels more like a minigame than a real game. Not my cup of tea.

Even the music is kind of ambient.

Not saying it's a bad game, but it bored me.

Tropico 4 is very similar to Tropico 3 in graphics and gameplay. However I think it is the better game, as it has a more interesting story and there is that bit more content (more building types and so on).

If you own Tropico 3 and want more of the same this is it. If you don't this is the better game.
