17β-estradiol is synthesized through conversion of testosterone and androstenedione by the cytochrome P450 aromatase, a product of the Cyp19a gene (1). 17β-estradiol regulates development and function of reproductive organs in all vertebrates (2, 3). In both sexes, gonads are primary sites for 17β-estradiol production, and 17β-estradiol is often described as a gonadal or sex hormone. However, recent studies provide evidence that 17β-estradiol is synthesized outside of the gonads and acts as a paracrine regulator (2, 4, 5). In an effort to identify nongonadal sites of de novo estrogen synthesis, we generated a double transgenic mouse line, in which an aromatase (Cyp19) promoter drives the expression of a red fluorescent protein (RFP). Aromatase is a key enzyme required for estrogen biosynthesis, and this line of mice (Cyp19-RFP)
