I am very disappointed with Rome II. This is not a rage review. It is a deep reflection on what this game lacks. And to start, this game lacks the greatness of its predecessors. This game marks a drastic departure from what made previous games in this series so enjoyable. And note, I post this review several weeks after release to give the game a fair shake. It was initially plagued by a series of debilitating bugs. However, I had faith that the developers would fix these issues, and to be fair, they mostly have. The game runs, I believe, as it was intended. But I must say, it is doomed. I genuinely try to enjoy the game. I pre-ordered the game at full price so I want to think that I'm getting my money's worth. But I just can't. I try to play and can't immerse myself in the experience. I find many problems with the game. The gameplay is notably slower. Taking over other territories is made much more difficult. I can't conquer the world in an afternoon like I did in previous iterations. And even if I tried to in Rome II, I'd still spend a significant portion of my time waiting for AI loading. I dislike the centralization of the armies. AND I HATE THE HUD. The graphics are beautiful and the combat is smooth. The game itself is decent but with so much potential, I can't help but feel disappointed with the devs.
