Runescape 1 was my very first MMORPG, it was 2D, and we had Dial-up internet.
Needless to say, Jagex pretty much defined the genre for me.
This version of Runescape, I'll call it "Runescape 2" aka Old School Runescape: is it's now updated predecessor.
Jagex has endlessly, and impressively supported and updated their games since 2001.
Every version of Runescape has it's own unique flavor but sticks to a pretty well known formula that is very addicting and gives you a lot of freedom: Options of Questing, PVE, A bit of PVP, and very relaxing skills to train with plenty to earn, learn and chase in a nice big open world named Gielinor.
Specific to Old School Runescape:
You're tapping into a bit of history, this game isn't homage to oldschool, it is oldschool, maintained for a long time.
