Deeply frustrating at times, and the UI can be your worst enemy. But the rich story, the open world, the fascinating characters and the deep battle system make this game nigh impossible to put down.

The sound and visuals are beautiful. The puzzles are well crafted. When I beat this game, I actually felt something, and that reminded me why games are incredible. I also gained a much greater understanding & appreciation for sequencers, oscillators, and modulation patterns. This may be the thing that gets me back into making music after all these years.

There are minor quibbles - large, open areas where there is no sound and nothing to interact with make it pretty frustrating to figure out where to go and what to do, especially at first. This isn't helped by the slow movement speed, or that you cannot see many interactive things in normal moving-around mode. But these could be fixed pretty easily, and even if they're not, it's well worth working past them.

Of all the games I have bought through Steam, FFXIV wants me to play it the least. Install problems, permissions issues, patch issues, I had to find some hidden config variable to skip the opening cinematic so it wouldn't crash, registering a Square Enix account is nigh impossible... I haven't played in like 3 months, and now it says "due to suspicious activity, your account is suspended. We sent you an email about how to fix this."

You know what? No. We're not going to fix this. You're getting deleted, XIV, and I'm going to play a game that runs without a ritual virgin sacrifice.
