Back when I was a tiny child playing on my mom's GameTap account, this is the game along with Ceasar III that got me into city builders. Truly wonderful, witty, and substantial for it's time. If you've got a liking for old games, or if you PC is a toaster, get this.

Fun little game that lets you be super creative with your pirate ship design. Unfortunately it's abandonware so don't get it unless it's dirt cheap.

TL;DR a solid and lively world-building concept ruined by poor execution.

Birthdays the Beginning is an interesting game about building a world and letting life evolve, an interesting concept that is poorly executed. Whilst the initial hours of the game are enjoyable for those who are creative (like myself,) it quickly gets bogged down by wonky controls and tedious world building.

First of all, the story is something slapped together in a few minutes, and actually a bit cruel if you think about it. There isn't much to say about it other than the fact that it is uninteresting. This game even goes out of it's way to explain what a food chain is, so you end up wanting to skip a lot of the dialogue the red avatar tells you. Speaking of skipping, that is something you wish you could do with this game's cutscenes. Not only is the story's cutscene lengthly, but there's also a dragged out dialogue every time you start the game.

That red avatar that guides you has a voice that quickly gets old, but other than that, the sounds are charming and there isn't much unneeded music. In fact, music changes depending on how you have shaped your world, which is a nice touch. When it comes to world building --the game's main selling point-- it does it decently. Building the world is cumbersome and time-comsuming, even with the larger brushes. However, the world does feel alive and it's very satisfying seeing lush forests where there was once rock; and you were the one who cultivated it. I feel like if there was a "smooth terrain" item, it would make things much, MUCH less tedious. The lack of any smoothing tools is what keeps me from recommending it.

The UI and controls are flat out terrible; even the most basic actions in any game are somehow made complex. This is quite obviously a console port, as the controls are unoptimized for the keyboard. For instance, moving your character is done using WASD, but moving the camera is with the arrow keys. Also, pressing [Esc] does not bring up the menu, but a weird submenu that could have easily been made into hotkeys. Although if they were, they could have been just as badly placed, like holding down C to sprint (try doing that while trying to use S or D.) Some hotkeys overlap, most noticably the item hotkeys with brush size. I found myself accidentally using items on multiple occasions, which can have drastic consequences on your world. By the way, there's NO autosave either!

Overall, Birthdays the Beginning is a niche appeal game, poorly optimized, unengaging, with some moments of satisfaction. The devs have said they plan to smoothen out keyboard controls, but that was back in Augist 2017.

A lot of people say the car sounds good/bad without actually accurately describing what it sounds like. Having lived in the Bay Area (California) for so long, I can tell you: it sounds like a very loud electric car, or whatever high-tech sci-fi sound you can think of. I honestly think it sounds pretty sweet, in addition to how cool it looks. If you're looking for a car that makes that classic heavy engine noise, this isn't the car you want. If you want a modern sounding electric car, buy this!

Fun fact: Electric cars have artificial sounds now, because they don't have a combustion engine to make the usual noise. The reason they had to add it; blind people were getting hit cause they wouldn't hear the electric cars coming. Basically, my mom's Leaf sounds like this car.

This game is so sweet and cute, my ovaries have exploded and I got diabetes.

Cuteness aside, it's a nice little casual farming simulator that is genuinely fun to play. The exploration aspect really adds to the likeability, as well as making sure it does not feel like a grind.

10/10 would rupture my female reproductive organs again.

Every time I close this game, I re-open it again and want to play it again.

This is a game where you can win no matter what country you start as. Literally!

Played the Cherokee, westernized, beat out the Europeans, got the No Trail of Tears Achievement.

10/10 I'll write a more in-depth review...eventually...when I'm not playing this game. :)
