You're not going mad - the tutorial does not work and keeps telling you you haven't hit the orbs. It took a post from 2021 to work out that this has been an issue for a while and it's still not resolved. This gives me no real confidence with the rest of the game so I will be requesting a refund while I still can. Have requested a refund.

This game was gifted to me - I probably would have never bought it myself just looking at the steam page. What I can tell you is it's like minecraft with dinosaurs and it's awesome. I already had friends playing the game so I was able to join their established tribe as soon as I'd spawned, but even without that I think it's a really fun and interesting game.
