Tekken 8 is a great game. It feels like a breath of fresh air after such a long time with Tekken 7, the big budget means that the game has been rebuilt from the ground-up: the visuals, the sound effects, everything has been remade. This game has a lot of potential to become the greatest fighting game of the current generation. However, there are some key points I want to touch on that completely ruin the whole experience:

1) Consumer-unfriendly, outright scummy even, monetization practices. These include Battle Pass and Tekken Shop. It wouldn't be such a huge problem had it not been added AFTER the initial game's release and reviews. Tekken Shop (a shop with micro-transactions that uses pseudo-currency Tekken coins, something similar to V-bucks in Fortnite) for the most part includes legacy character outfits that were free in previous Tekken games (as of right now, there's only one unique costume pack, everything else is Tekken Lounge avatar outfits or legacy character outfits). Instead of creating brand new content for Tekken Shop, Bandai Namco has decided that they don't need to create new things and can just reuse assets from previous Tekken titles and put a price tag on them. Same goes for the Battle Pass, which for the most part includes low-quality items (I'm talking about you, Ball.) or items that were base customization options in Tekken 7 that are now locked behind a paywall. Not only did they include scummy monetisation practices like micro-transactions and Battle Pass (2 of them???) in the $70 AAA game, but they didn't even bother putting the brand new content behind this paywall, they just reused old assets from previous Tekken entries.

2) As a result, the default customization that is included in the base version of the game feels really limited, as if it was intentionally cut short just so the developer can create Battle Pass and Tekken Shop where they'd put the rest of the customization items. The other thing about the customization I dislike is that you cannot use separate pieces from the default outfits along with custom parts. For example, I want to use the top of Jin Kazama's default outfit 1, but for the bottom part I want to use custom pants and shoes. I can't do that, as I have to either use the entire default outfit 1, or use custom pieces only. Tekken 7 let us mix the default outfits with custom pieces, so I don't see any reason to delete this feature from the game.

3) The aggression and aggressive gameplay that lies in the core design of Tekken 8 is just way too overwhelming. The reason for this is that Tekken 7's gameplay was too turtly and defensive, players would just Korean backdash and look for openings the whole time or turtle until the timer runs out. While I approve of the shift to more aggressive head-on gameplay, in my opinion the developers have gone way too overboard with aggression. So much so, that it makes defensive play way too difficult, if not kills it. Tekken is a 3D game that has many ways of dealing with opponent's attacks: you can sidestep, you can backdash, you can duck the highs or throws, you can just block etc. As many other people (including world class pro players like Knee and Arslan Ash) have pointed out, the aggressiveness is absurd in this game. They made grabs homing (why?) and added unbreakable grabs (Like Reina's grabs out of stances or King's grab out of Jaguar sprint), they nerfed the backdash, the Heat system makes it so every character basically gets a forced 50/50. Those changes, among the other ones, remove skill expression from the game and basically reduce the gameplay to randomly guessing an opponent's 50/50.

4) As a result of said shift to aggressive gameplay, in my opinion, the quality of matches has gone down significantly. Because of how skewed the risk-reward ratio is towards the aggression compared to defense, people are always in your face mashing buttons, mashing launchers, heat engagers, heat smashes etc. It is common to see people with stats like "40 Defense, 90 Attack" even in higher ranks (Fujin and above), let alone lower ranks. It is just not worth it to be a defensive player since you receive way too much chip damage (block damage) if your opponent is in Heat, and once they get their offense going, the gameplay just becomes one-sided. It is safe to assume that if you give players such strong offensive tools, it is also fair to give them stronger defensive options to defend from said tools.

5) The Heat system. While I understand that Tekken 8 is the first ever Tekken game to implement any sort of meter system, it has to be tuned and balanced. From what I understand (and can only assume), the Heat Smashes were designed around them having different inputs (Examples: First hit of Dragunov's Heat Smash that looks similar to his running 2, first hit of Jin's Heat Smash that looks similar to his Demon Paw), but then it's been decided that the input is going to be stardardized. As a result we have things like 10 frame startup Jack-8 Heat Smash or 13 frame startup Jun Heat Smash. They either have to change frame startup on those Heat Smashes and standardize this also, or make Heat Smashes have different inputs, because it is not okay to have 60 damage "Super" move with the same frame properties as a jab string, if you ask me. Not to mention that Heat Smashes beat everything, except Rage Art. Heat Burst being a power crush is another thing I dislike. The combination of Heat Smash that beats everything and Heat Burst being a power crush that also beats regular power crushes effectively makes Heat a cheap robbery mechanic. The other problem is that you take too much block damage when your opponent is in Heat, you can easily lose half your health bar to block damage, which effectively means that you're being punished for blocking. Also the safe power crush Heat Engagers are ridiculous.

6) DLC characters. Bandai Namco has already been guilty of releasing broken DLC characters in the past (Leroy, Fahkumram) and Eddy Gordo is looking pretty strong, which makes you wonder whether they are going to keep releasing broken DLC characters. The first DLC character is Eddy Gordo who's been in the base roster of every mainline Tekken game ever since his debut in Tekken 3, it was really surprising seeing them cut Eddy out from the game just to release him as DLC. They have also said during Tekken Talk that they are going to streamline him, we can see that with his "333" spam combo that they have showcased as an example of that. There are fairly simple sample combos for every character in this game so I'm not sure why would they do that, do you think the new or casual players aren't able to learn a sample combo, Tekken Team? The simplification and streamlining only leads to the loss of character identitiy and the removal of skill expression. It is safe to assume that they are going to release Armor King eventually and this trend of simplification and streamlining makes me worried whether they're going to streamline Armor King as well.

7) While I understand the removal of infinite rematch in Ranked, it makes no sense at all to remove infinite rematch in Group Match or Quick Match. I myself have made a lot of friends via infinite rematch and removing that just takes away the social element of the game where people would add each other after a long set.

8) Speaking of online play, while I myself have rarely ran into cheaters, it's ridiculous that famous cheaters (Fariborz) and pluggers (LowTierGod) are able to stream themselves plugging and cheating for years and Bandai Namco has done nothing about it, they banned them, sure, but they just created new accounts and keep playing the game. The anti-cheat is non-existent in this game. And Ranked point grind is so slow and difficult that people would rather one-and-done you instead of playing the full set which makes learning process even slower.

And if devs don't listen, it's going to be the downfall of Tekken.
