What is there to say about this game that hasn't been said already. Superb world-building and enviromental storytelling, top notch gameplay, graphics and artistic design, the highest quality game to date. If only it didn't recycle so much content, since it tends to get a bit repetitive if you're searching for every little nook and cranny.

Setting-wise, this game's a breath of fresh air, being left to fend off for yourself on a post-apocalyptic world whose wilderness is now overrun by mutated wild beasts, monsters, reavers and other threats. The world building here is great. Despite its lack of polish on the combat (even though it's not as bad as some believe it is in my opinion), the exploration reached the expected level someone would anticipate from a Piranha Bytes title.

Peak action and graphics like the series has never seen before, the best DMC game to date despite its sometimes cringeworthy dialogue and clunky story (which still manages to be interesting).

Even though the exploration feels kind of set in stone due to all the map markers, not giving you much of a choice when it comes to finding new places for yourself, the world feels alive. Anyone could tell that there's been tremendous work put into this game without a doubt, always managing to make even the smallest of things interesting (per say there wasn't even one side quest I can think of which felt generic like in many other action RPGs).
It wouldn't be an overexaggeration to call this game a masterpiece.

The game adds a new twist to the franchise via its new character Nero whilsts maintaining and improving on all its previous identity, also including a superb story along the way. Even though it recycles some content here and there, it still stands to be a very good game.

The direction this game took is kinda sad.. even more so than Risen 2 in some aspects. You're starting off as a Dragonsnapper slayer, one that can face multiple undead warriors at a time, as long as you have enough resources. At least in the 2nd game you at least would defeat enemies on somewhat believable terms. The game also has a lot of backtracking if your goal is to finish as many of the side quests as possible, most of which tend to feel kinda blank. Those were just some of the issues this game has.
On the other hand, this game's graphics and animations look very good (one of my main problems with immersion in Pyranha Bytes games were the animations), I didn't step across any bugs on my playthrough (appart from the fact that I had to install a mod to make the game run smoother, (fixing that may have been a byproduct of putting the shadow detail settings to high instead of ultra though) and the voice acting, at least for the main cast of characters, is pretty good.
Since this game's not particularly expensive, especially on a sale, grabbing it is a pretty good deal. Having said that, Risen 1 still remains my favorite game out of the trilogy.

Definetely a fun game, even though it's seperate from the rest of the franchise. I try to appreciate it for what it is.

A masterpiece

Despite going far off from the first game's formula, abandoning the system that made you feel weak, having you fight your way through with your own strength, this still is a somewhat fun experience. The change in setting (from medieval to pirate), even though not ideal, since I'd prefer the game to go on with the medieval theme, was alright.
Having said all that, be prepared for a different type of game than the last one.
