Have you ever gone to a really good Chinese resturant? Like, one so good that whenever you go to a different one you compare it and it leaves you disappointed? That is Elden Ring, but for gaming. Like all of it. Seriously this game came out three months ago and I have put over three hundred hours into it. That is a hundred hours a month. I spent 70 hours in the last two weeks on this game. I genuinely can't play any other game because half way through it I'll boot up Elden Ring and go through another playthrough. I have had three playthroughs that range from 50 hours to 140 hours and despite beating the game a couple of hours ago I am considering making a new character and going in again. With DLC I can easily see this being a game I sink thousands of hours into.

I got this with the rest of the DLC in a sales pack and it was cheaper to buy the sales pack than the individual DLC I actually wanted. This DLC and anarchy's children are pretty much the same, in that the fact they exist is puzzling. If I was to make a guess the out of touch corpos at 2K decided to appeal to people with too much money and a gaming addiction by including skin packs that add absolutely nothing to the game. I mean Jesus Christ these are cosmetics in a single player game why would you bother? You can't even flaunt your wealth off to people with financial sense like in TF2 it's just pointless. And I don't even know if the cosmetics are any good since I downloaded a couple of cosmetic mods and they offered the best looks for my squad. Unless you want to disappoint your parents just don't bother with this DLC or anarchy's children.

This DLC is a mixed bag. You get some cool items with it, some of which are just direct upgrades though. A bolt caster gun that is more powerful than an assualt rifle, but has to be reloaded after every shot. Dual axes where one of them can be thrown and still has the same damage as your normal sword (no stun though). A bunch of armour that are pretty strong, even in late game. And last but not least, three OP as ♥♥♥♥ bosses.

Seriously anytime my squad would encounter one of these bosses at least one guy died. The fact that these bosses have a turn even if one of my guys move is just stupid. I could use frost bombs but they usually only work for a turn (meaning one guy in your squad can do an action). I could outfit my entire squad with frost bombs but its like there specific missions for these bosses, they just show up in random missions. I don't want to use a slot just in case a giant snake decides to assault my squad on a council mission. The worst part of it is that ADVENT doesn't even attack these monsters, and the monsters don't attack ADVENT, which makes no sense. You're telling me these horrors of genetic engineering show their ugly head in the world, likely just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ everything up in sight since they're mad or whatever and ADVENT is just okay with that? These monsters that seem to only want to rampage and cause destruction would prefer to target my troops and not the legion of alien human hybrids? It doesn't make sense.

On top of that the DLC is broken, like one other DLC. To be fair I did have some mods installed but unless the 2K launcher feels like disabling important bits of a DLC just because I wanted more hair options, I don't see why they would clash. The mission where you meet the first boss, big snake boi, never showed up. Then the first time I met a monster I was completely caught off guard and they just annihilated my squad and I had to go back to another save and wait for better gear to go back to that site. Exact same thing happened with the other two. The gear I got from it was good, but the way it just strolled into my missions is annoying considering how much health those things have and that they can attack your out of position heavy just by someone sneezing.

Ultimately I don't recommend this DLC. It's broken and clunky and just not worth the money. I only got it because it was in a sales pack and was cheaper to get that then buy the DLC I wanted individually. So unless this gets tagged along with other DLC on sale, just don't bother, you're not missing out on much, except maybe pain.

Honestly, this is one of those DLCs that you need to buy with the game to get the full experience. Without this DLC you lose on things like:
A melee focused unit that is actually fun and viable.
The best scouting unit you could ever hope for.
A unit who can pull enemies right to their face and knife them.
Three challenging boss characters that give you nice rewards for killing them while also being interesting.
World building.

This DLC is what XCOM enemy within is for XCOM enemy unknown. I cannot imagine playing without it.

The best way I can describe this game (or at least how I felt about it) is that it's similar to having a bunch of action figures and making stories by playing with them. You all know what I mean, when you were a kid you would play with dolls or action figures and make little stories around it and you could get lost for hours with that. That's Kenshi for me. I started a few playthroughs but failed multiple times because I didn't know what I was doing until I actually read up a bit online and played for a good 50ish hours, then I started my main playthrough where I "finished" the game. The Monks of the Fist

His name was Oji, he was part of an isolated village that practiced the ancient art of meditation and martial arts. However, one day the village was discovered and raided by the United Cities mistaking them for a far off Holy Nation farm. Oji was the only one who escaped and found refuge in the borderzone, well away from nobles eye's. He was devastated and felt survivors guilt. He would roam the Shek kingdoms with the voices of his village shouting at him. He worked for hours by mining iron to distract from the noise, walking with tons of iron on his back, it didn't help. One day he attacked a Shek guard and was beaten to a pulp and thrown in jail, he survived and stayed in that jail for weeks. He contemplated what had happened and remembered what his master taught. With much time and meditation he was able to calm himself and he realised what he had to do, get stronger and take revenge on the nobles who took away his family, his community, his master. He got out of jail and trained from there on, recruiting lost souls along the way, and soon the village that was destroyed was reborn in Shek lands. The Monks of the Fist came back. Soon Oji and his squad moved around looking for new foes to slay and bring to the Stone Golem, hoping one day to ally and bring down the United Cities. That day came. The Stone Golem, the leader of all the Shek, recognised the power of the monks and an alliance was made. War was declared once Oji and his squad kidnapped a noble and burned him in sight of the city, the noble's last sight being the city tearing itself apart. One by one the nobles fell, the slaves freed, the empire crumbled and shook in it's weakened state. The last target was the Emporer himself. Thought to be untouchable, now ashes. Oji couldn't save his village, but he avenged them and made the world a better place. He later on died from a creepy giraffe, but his legacy carries on in the village of Chi, the home of the monks.

That is why I love Kenshi, it is so expansive and free where you can make your own story despite there being no voice actors, no real story and the lore is vague in many areas. You make your own story using the setting of Kenshi, which is beautiful and dangerous and cruel. Yeah it has it's issues like the game having to load in new areas, which can take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. The outpost aspect isn't all that fun unless you're trying to make money and the fact that your characters get stuck on the terrain all the time. These are fairly minor issues which are easy to overcome. Honestly, if this game interests you in the slightest then get it, you won't regret it. Just be prepared for the beginning to be tough as nails, it doesn't pull its punches. Remember though, if it doesn't kill you it absolutely will make you stronger.

the tl;dr of it
The gameplay of the game is amazing and its mechanics are super in depth and leaves a ton of freedom of how you can play the game. However, I don't recommend it because everything else around the gameplay isn't fun.
It's not fun because:
  • There's no casual scene
  • Match making is broken
  • The community is toxic
  • Various mechanical issues

the actual review
The game is solid, pretty solid if a bit complicated. The fact that most things are destructible makes this one of the most unique FPS online games you can play. It's not rigid and ultra realistic like arma but you usually get punished for running around and just trying to get kills. The closest thing I can compare this game to is CS:GO, but it's not a good comparison. Nonetheless, I can't recommend it because it generally isn't fun anymore. The three main reasons why it isn't fun anymore is this:

there is no casual scene
I played this the first year it came out. It was a pretty interesting game and the community was nice. Because of the mechanics the game became my favourite FPS game, but they changed things overtime. Eventually it hit over 50 million players and by then it changed from an interesting game I liked to an esport grinder. There is no casual scene, you get ranked, ranked lite, and ranked lite+. They even brought in a fun arcade game called golden gun, where everyone has a deagle that one shot kills. When it came out it was the most fun I've had with the game in a long time, but they pulled it out after some time for no reason. There aren't any more valentine events, halloween events, nothing. So if you ever thought that this had a casual scene and that attracted you, then don't bother.

matchmaking is broken
9/10 times when I'm playing in ranked I'm playing a match where the teams are clearly not balanced. It either is I'm on the losing side or I'm on the winning side. I'll be playing with team mates that don't know the basics of the game and don't understand how important intel is meanwhile the enemy team is communicating with each other and can know advanced techniques of the game. On top of that, there will be many times where I'll be talking with someone who doesn't speak the same langauge, so even if they have a mic we'll never be able to understand each other. The matchmaking they have now just doesn't work, there's a large amount of luck that gets put into winning a game if you solo qeue. If you have a team then it's a lot better, but unless you have a group of friends who you play with then you'll have to look for one which is its own headache. When looking for teams people either have this idea that they'll be the next shroud and should only be playing with diamonds (despite being a gold 4) or they don't take the game seriously at all and would rather goof off.

the community is ♥♥♥♥
Ask anyone who pays this game and they'll tell you that the people who play it are just the worst. They'll berate you for missing a shot, they'll trash talk you for a small mistake, they'll team kill you if they don't like you. Worst of all, most people just never talk in this game unless it's to trash talk. There's nothing wrong with trash talking but if that's all you see and hear then the experience is just ruined. Pair that with the match making and all you get is a cycle of being in a team that doesn't communicate, gets toxic if they're losing, then loses. Thank god there isn't a reputation scheme otherwise everyone would just report the bottom fragger as throwing and get them banned for not being good at the game. There's not much else to say except ♥♥♥♥ the community.

side note: some mechanical issues
I almost didn't list this because it's rare and usually doesn't ruin the game for me. The game has some genuine issues outside of matchmaking as well. Hipfire is completely random, meaning sometimes that someone will miss all of his shots at point blank and sometimes he'll headshot you once by accident. It doesn't come up often because most people will aim down sights. Hitreg is weird, they'll be a few times where I was sure I headshot someone and it turns out I barely did any damage despite blood coming out. Debris will block your sight and can make it so that you had no idea an enemy was there, and it's client sided so what you see isn't what the enemy sees. Sometimes a bit of debris will block someone's face but they can see you just fine because for them it isn't there and then you're dead.

in conclusion
The game used to be a lot more fun in its early days and the community used to actually be friendly and nice, once it hit around 30 million players it changed into a game where there is no casual scene, the matchmaking is broken, and some turkish guy is screaming into the mic about how bad you are but never gives any intel. Overall I don't recommend this game because it's not something you can just play to enjoy. It feels like a grind most of the time if you solo qeue ranked and you don't have any other options. It's not like in tf2 where you can just play the game casually or in CS:GO where you have custom servers and such. All you get is ranked, ranked lite, and ranked lite+ that's it. It's a real shame because I love the gameplay of the game, it's so unique and there's no other game that does it like siege, yet it just isn't fun anymore.

I remember first playing XCOM 2 and thinking it was absolute bs. Snake ladies that can pull your guys out of cover and spit acid. Codex ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that could just teleport behind your guy and kill him. The turn timer frustrating me. I even wrote a review about how this game was worse than XCOM enemy within.

Then one day I had nothing to play and decided to give this another shot, since I was in a turn based strategy mood. For whatever reason, something clicked in my head and I played the game twice back to back. Once as the game by itself, then with the DLC. By the end of it I was even considering going a third time with some wacky mods (the modding scene is insane for this game btw).

When you actually get a good grasp of the mechanics and have a dash of good luck, you feel like a tactical god. Throwing a grenade at some cover for your sniper to shoot, but he's got serial so you get another squadmate to blow up some more cover and before you know it, an entire legion of xenos are dead in one turn. You add in the DLC and it gets even more insane. By the end game you're not just killing aliens, you're picking the best way to style on those poor xenos. This game takes the spot with XCOM enemy within as one of my favourite games, easily. If you liked the last game or just turn based gameplay, you'll probably love this game.

This game is probably one of the most addictive games I've ever played. There's just something about the freedom to do whatever you want in the world to boost your wealth and reputation that is hard to describe.
Want to be a homicidal bandit that spits on the Geneva convention? You can do that
Want to be a knight that picks up girls with poetry and fights for honour and glory? Nothing is stopping you
Do you dislike a certain kingdom because a vassal beat you in combat? Well wipe Swadia off the face of the planet with it's own superior calvary and get rich by systematically raiding their defenseless villages. If you're a vassal of another kingdom you might just get those same villages you ransacked with no consequences. Best bit is, those villages now have to pay you taxes.
Want to take over the world? That's the only way you can finish the game.

However, there are some issues with the game.
First and foremost the graphics are terrible, there is no denying that. If you can't stand to look at anything below 1080p then I'd give this a pass.
The AI isn't great, both in field and in diplomacy. Horses just can't seem to get past infantry and archers spam their arrows at enemies from miles away.
The game can also be a bit of a grind at times as you try to gain wealth to build a larger army with better gear.
The game is pretty unforgiving and has a steep learning curve with almost no tutorial. If your army is wiped out you are essentially at square one but with better gear, and you have to grind your way up again.

Overall I'd recommend it to people as it usually is cheap as chips on sale and it's a game like no other that I've experience. On top of that mods expand the game to new heights, allowing people to negate some of the negative aspects (except graphics) or change the game to a whole new setting.

Honestly it's a good game. Revolvers are difficult to use but used well they are deadly, shotguns are great at short range except the pump shotgun which is the best gun in the game. Melee makes you faster and kills in 3 or 2 hits. You get better weapons with the money you passively gain overtime and buy them in chests located around the map. Whiskey heals you but also makes you drunk, decreasing your accuracy and most importantly of all the community it just great. So for a game that is free and essentially a silly cowboy battle royale you just can't complain, you got no reason not to give it a try.
