This is game is recommended but with a MAJOR restriction: this game is unreasonably hard!

The game has nice graphics and art, a great abstract history to it, big metroidvania map for your delight and lots of stuff to do.

But all this requires a lot of your effort. The platforming was made hard on purpose... hard enemies... incredible difficult to get power ups... save points are few and aways far from the bosses... teleports (fast travel) are also very scarce... and there's that body recovery system that's very like Dark Souls or Nier Automata.

If that's not enough, a certain part of the game makes you feel like you're playing Super Meat Boy. Urgh

The high difficult, though, is not a reason for you not to play this. But you should be warned beforehand. Preferably, put some protection between you and your monitor so you won't smash it with your head on rage moments.

One of the best RPGs ever... but a disgusting port.

Absolutely NOTHING was considered when porting this from mobile devices to the PC. Nothing at all. That prompting battle menu is so innefective and obnoxious I wondered why they even bothered making it.

Not even the mods can fix this... yet. Actually some of them make the game look dark and ugly.

I may change this review in the future if either Square-Enix make a decent PC port without that battle menu (I doubt it, though) or the modding community fix most of these.

Until then, stay away from this thing.

Excellent game, not so good port.

Still, you can make things much better if you mod it. And using Borderless Gaming too.

I recommend it: the best thing about PC gaming is the fact that you can mod your way to perfection. And in this case, you can achieve it kinda easily.

As for the game itself, it's on my top 5 best FF. Excellent, almost PERFECT job system, great history, charismatic chars...

Just go for it.

Again, a port of a port (this was ported from the DS to Android and then to PC/Steam). This sounds bad, but the game actually can be modded to be a little more PC friendly.

Even so, the game is plainly bad. It requires an inhumane amout of griding to actually get strong and being able to do some of the optional stuff, or even the obligatory one.

And yes, the Final Fantasy franchise is about being able to do some optional stuff, with some difficult but not as nearly as the one this game demands.

Just to finish, I'm a long time Final Fantasy player and expert. If you want something better with a job system, stick to FFV, a much better port and game.

It's the good old FF II SNES with revamped graphics. A true Square-Enix remake, with 3D graphics, CG scenes and cutscenes for the DS.

Why does it get so many negative reviews, though?

2 reasons. The first one involves this being ported from the DS to Android systems and then from Android to PC. Which means this game was designed for the 2 screens interface of the DS, meaning things are either "rigged" or tottally lost, like the map system, the party screen on the menu and stuff like this, or the Whyt feature that was removed. This IS bothersome, but does not make the game unplayable. In fact, it is doable and you can play without too much convenience loss.

The second reason is because there was a PSP version with "more content" and old-school graphics that could've been ported to PC instead of the DS remake. Well, although this is a consistent complain, I think it's unfair. The PSP version offers no innovation at all compared to the GBA port or even the SNES original version. Interlude is mostly fanfic level stuff. So is the After Years, although being good, you can still get it on steam. The DS version is the only one that offers a real innovation, both graphics and gameplay-like.

So if you like Final Fantasy games, get this one, it's on my top-3 FF games. It's not a perfect port, but it's still fun and, in my opinion, was a better choice over the PSP version for Steam. Of course, the most hardcore fans will still struggle over an option superboss that was left aside, but... really? Is this what "fun" means? Minor optional stuff not ported over? I don't think so.
