In some ways it is still just as bad as it was as it got onto steam: The early-game is still terrible, the feedback on melee attacks is still super bad, logging out is still the safest way to escape every situation, there is still a giant amount of lag everywhere and you pretty much cannot play the game without having a map open on another screen.
I could go on BUT my conclusion is that the game is fine in its current state. Mods also really make it more than the sum of its parts and overall: DayZ is fine, more than playable and pretty much what you would expect.

My problem is with the way the standalone version of DayZ was handled. I am convinced that it could have been as incredibly popular (and even more renowned, but that is a story for another day ;) as PUBG or similar projects since it got created the same way: As an ARMA2 mod that gained a giant following and changed gaming forever.
Unfortunately, it never got the love it deserved even though it had so much momentum even after it got released in a next to unplayable state. That install base was no joke, especially at the time.

This game really got killed by Dean Halls [DayZ's creator] unrealistic ambition and ran on the low burner ever since he realized his ambitions where impossible to accomplish.
The amount of unused potential really is saddening and I often think about “what could have been” if Dean Hall where to tune back his vision just a bit or at least if he did not give up on his vision after the game still was far from being in an acceptable state.

I hope he learned from his mistake and gets some help when managing his next project so that a more acceptable product gets released… But who am I kidding, right after Dean Hall left his team at Bohemia Interactive with the shallow remains of what was DayZ at the time, he thought it was smart idea to announce a space simulation that obviously already got canned years ago (my guess is due to lack of vision).
