this game always rubbed me the wrong way even before the very first announcements of its development, specially since it was at a time where ManiaPlanet 4 was released as a mandatory update with several quality-of-life and gameplay feature changes that became actively broken or straight-up removed¹, making a scrap of everything Trackmania 2 had to offer as the successor of Trackmania Nations Forever.

now with this title, it claims to be free but essentially everything that keeps the game alive (i.e community interaction, community maps, overall social features, etc) is behind a paywall. that would be okay if it wasn't for the renting model. you are not allowed to buy a license and keep it forever, not allowed to buy the up-to-date patch and keep it regardless of updates, or anything similar. you can only choose to either rent for 1 to 3 years, or play the bare bones of what it could have been.

can't do anything if still you choose to pay. the community is great and friendly, the gameplay loop is all about you against yourself (talk about Celeste and the speedrunning community in general), and the community-made content is fun to explore. just know that the rent is plaguing this game along with tons of other computer software these days, and by paying you're further supporting this.

¹ edit because i forgot: some examples of changed features in the game was: removal of Local Splitscreen mode, you can no longer instantly skip the finish line animation by pressing Restart, removal of the main menu animations (it used to have a background almost resembling Midnight Club 3), texture changes imported from Trackmania Turbo that looks completely out of place in ManiaPlanet, the minimalist hud used to be similar to Trackmania 2020, but was changed into a crowded screen with a huge circle for a speed indicator, lights no longer casts multiple shadows when nearby multiple light sources, the starting position in all ManiaPlanet titles got an insignificant change which invalidated each and every replay file and world record that was sent ever since the very first releases of ManiaPlanet, the netcode became broken to the point where a lot of live events that were hosted in Trackmania 2 in general became discontinued, the list goes on.

really makes me garry my mod

This is a modded TeeWorlds client, less than ~10MB (not counting map and custom looks downloads), and has a bunch of quality-of-life features which the base game lacks. it is specifically for the modded gamemodes that everyone plays instead of the vanilla Capture The Flag and Deathmatch modes which are full of empty servers usually. It is also still maintained to this day, specially since the entirety of the source code is under a free, permissive license along with free audiovisual content, which makes it easy for you to just do whatever with your client and create new stuff if you ever wish to do that, and maintaining the game becomes a community effort (i'm not in the community myself, but i love the game and how it's maintained).

it's overall a pretty good game. i highly suggest getting at least 2 friends to join together with you and discover the maps in the server listings (starting with Tutorial, which has a cool and easy learning curve).

it hurts to play

yes, i pirated this game and YES, i paid full price for it even after almost two whole years. i have no regrets.

I had been waiting a loooong time to get a legit copy of this game. no regrets. still a great addicting game to play ^^
