Best AI in the series, best map in the series, fantastic animations, fun stealth design, fun side content. Gunplay was better in the first, though

If you're interested enough in a *not* Wii Sports vr compilation game to be reading the reviews, then you'll be satisfied with what you get. The only things to bear in mind going in is that 1) this is more encompassing than the original Wii sports (closer in scope to Resort), but it is not a Nintendo game. Do not expect that je ne sais quoi that they have. Also, the original Wiimote lacked gyro, so it relied on the "waggle" style of play we all are familiar with. That is not the case here, so certain games like baseball require considerably more skill and precision to actually hit the ball.

This is a great Christmas game. Some bad things include bugs, performance, general jank. I had 2 or 3 full crashes on me during my playthrough, clear doorways would occasionally have invisible walls, though I always managed to get through eventually without reloading, stuff like that. Nothing gamebreaking, but I had no such issues in the other Arkham games. Additionally, this is an early implementation of PhysX, and as such, it sucks. Assassin's Creed Black Flag suffers a similar fate, that enabling PhysX causes the game to drop frames or stutter, even on beastly modern hardware (full disclosure I have an AMD GPU right now, but experienced the same thing with NVIDIA cards. Then there's general jank. Takedowns not always triggering, combat feeling just a little bit clunky, it's ultimately down to the age of the game. It's a 7th gen game, I guess we've just forgotten how polished certain things like controls have gotten. Definitely play this (along with the other 2 from this era) before Arkham Knight because man it is tough going the other way. Now for the good stuff. The atmosphere of Christmas time is incredible. More games need to have Christmas eve as a setting. it's dark insofar that it is a Batman game, but not like unnecessarily to come of as tryhard. The movement and combat are good, albeit not as much as Knight. The age of the game does show a little bit, but they feel good. I particularly like the special combo moves. The stealth is great... if you haven't played knight. Yeah, this was a bit rough. Batman unsurprisingly doesn't have the same abilities in this game as he does in knight, and that is fine at the beginning when it's ultimately easier. But the AI doesn't go easy on you forever, and as they get harder, it becomes a bit more tedious, which isn't to say it's bad. The AI reacts appropriately to your playstyle and isn't brainless, while still keeping it reasonable enough to remain accessible for people that are in it for other reasons. Lastly, I'll touch on the story and presentation stuff. It is simple but very well done. Joker is captivating, the game provides enjoyable starts to the Bat's beef with his baddies, and there's some heartfelt moments in there for good measure. The performances are phenomenal too. Roger is a very talented VA, but I was impressed to hear him keep his voice so low comfortably. Troy was just the opposite, I was impressed by his blatant impression of Mark Hamill. His voice is so recognizable (similar to Roger in that way) that normally if he is in something, you can point him out pretty easily, but he really did a great job of going all in here. All in all a wonderful experience that any fan of stealth action, open world, superhero, or Batman fans should absolutely play. Just maybe make sure PhysX is disabled.

If you paid for this you kinda get shafted but it's still Rocket League so of course I recommend it. Community is toxic though so be aware.

The big takeaway from this is support. When I bought the game, only endless mode was available. $20 for that was pretty steep, but it looked technically sound and like great fun. Since then the game has seen multiple patches and content updates. The asking price now I would say is justified without question. I will say the last time I played I did have some issues with jump and wall run detection where the game was seemingly eating inputs fairly often. I don't know if that was just me or if it wasn't, maybe it's been addressed. Another slight issue is the performance given the graphical fidelity. There has been an update since I last played so again I'm not sure if this is still an issue, but I'm aware VR is demanding, but this game isn't the most graphically intense VR game I have. I would love to see more options (in a perfect world all VR games would have as many options as like fallout 4 VR). Still, the game is really fun, a decent workout if you really get into it and play it for a while, and it's bound to only get better.

I remember watching some YouTube video on why past Superman games have been absolute dumpster fires. It said that instead of nerfing Supes, there should be a challenge created in some other way, such as a time limit, etc. This game takes the idea of an OP superhero and nails it flawlessly. Your character doesn't even have a health bar, but you know what does? The city. That's right, the bosses can damage the city, and it is up to you to multi-task by putting the hurt on them while repairing the city. But be careful, as you can also damage the city, even more so than the boss. Any stray range attacks actually do MORE damage than the bosses'. Also, be careful where you hit them, as your superpowered punches can send them careening into nearby buildings which also damages them.

Interesting mechanics mean nothing without fun gameplay and solid control. If you've ever played Prototype, you may notice how that game feels loose and almost sloppy. After all, the fun IS in destroying things. Here, while you definitely need to control yourself, the game makes that very doable. There is an insane amount of lock-on for melee, but that just services the feeling of being overpowered. There aren't really any combos or any depth, but that isn't the point of the design. The flight and general movement controls are perfect. Think if Infamous Second Son was made as a Superman game, and that's about the feel you get here.

In today's age, PC gaming is very much about spectacle. I'll be honest. The graphics aren't insane. Many of the models are bland and I'm fairly sure many assets are straight out of the Unreal Engine store. The lighting is fine, but nothing to write home about. The player model is pretty clean and the very video-gamey graphic design has grown on me quickly. at the very least, it is clear what's what. However, any complaints stop once you see the particle effects. Probably helped by Unreal 4 being an absolute beast, the effects in this game are beautiful. A better lighting engine could make them even more stunning, such as with the aforementioned Infamous Second Son, but for what is here, it looks good in motion. SPEAKING of motion, the first thing that you'll notice besides the particle effects is the animation. It is genuinely smoother than some AAA games, but is clear and defined. They have mastered the idea of key poses, and they're pretty skillful at getting the model to those poses in a natural but snappy way. Some poses genuinely reminded me of Spider-Man PS4.

You also may have noticed that this game is free, so you probably didn't bother reading this. But if you've gotten this far, this is a charming, unique yet generic, over the top fun little action romp. Absolutely try it out, and I cannot wait to see where these ideas are taken in the future.
