As someone with probably over 1000 hours on competitive Pokemon sims, all the way back to Gen 4, I love this game (I have dozens of hours as a tester not shown by the steam review). Unlike Pokemon, it's designed from the ground up for the competitive experience. Balance patches can happen instead of outright bans. There's no RNG, so you never lose a game to missing Focus Blast. Along with that, the two new mechanics (batteries and captains) really make it feel distinct from Pokemon, even if the core gameplay has similarities.

Along with that, the game is much more streamlined. I know a lot of people who want to try a game like competitive Pokemon but the amount of information to learn is daunting. With BNO, you can pretty quickly learn the rules and fighters and jump right in.
