It's a 3D platformer disguised as a skating game. Fairly basic trick system that boils down to pressing three buttons and occasionally a fourth, the complexity comes from knowing your environment and move throughout it without dropping your trick combo.

A much more involved story than you would expect from a game touted as a Jet Set Radio successor, which will very likely bother most people as it could get in the way of just skating around, but I thought it wasnt so bad. I would say the best solution is to try and do most things in an area before doing any crew battle stuff. The game seems to be paced around this kind of play, as doing the minimum amount to continue will make each area quite short.

it's like 5D chess with the simplicity of only 2 dimensions.
