This game is a shadow of it's former self.

It's a wonderful game by itself, but not as a follow up to Aragami.

Don't get me wrong, the game looks amazing compared to the first. And the gameplay (when it works) is rather smooth and satisfying. I know the game just released so take everything I'm going to say with a grain of salt. But I do believe there are three things that could fix this as a sequel to Aragami, not just being a standalone title.

The online stability is shaky but given it's week one. I don't expect much quite yet. That's one issue that can be easily resolved and knowing the devs, will probably get fixed rather quickly.

The combat feels like I'm playing For Honor or Dark Souls. I don't feel the same rush I did with Aragami where I could truly use being a ninja to my advantage. I feel more like a Samurai than a Ninja. In the previous installment, you had a rather generous amount of base game options to assassinate someone. In this, if I'm not on top of the enemy, I'm coin-flipping if I'm going to kill them or get thrown into detection and combat. It's nowhere near rewarding as planning out your kill and timing it against the surrounding enemies.

While I heavily enjoy the new movement mechanics. They are insanely good and I love the momentum you can use to just traverse the map with ease (assuming you don't just break your ankles because that's new). But the stamina is insanely low from the start. The comparison I use for this is the shadow meter in Aragami. With the first installment, you were able to teleport from spot to spot based on how well you actually used the shadows and how much you kept yourself from being seen. In this, when you teleport, you've now lost 50% of your stamina. And that's just base game. Base game Aragami 1 allowed atleast four consecutive teleports assuming you stayed in shadow.

Overall, this game makes me wanna play Aragami 1 more than play Aragami 2. I have high hopes that either one, the devs make changes to reflect the masterpiece that was Aragami 1 or two, the community mods this game in ways that will look to improve upon the experience. But I couldn't get past 75 minutes before these took a mental toll on my playthrough. I will more than likely redo / edit my review and outlook on this game, assuming the game gets the love and attention that the community gave Aragami 1.
