Coming off the back of the wonderful Bastion, Supergiant games have delivered another gem with Transistor. A beautifully colourful and interesting world, a haunting female protagonist and an odd but cool combat system combine to make one of the most interesting games of the year for me. The musical score is excellent as well, as has been a regular fixture on my Spotify playlist. I wrote more here: http://goplaythat.com/2014/07/09/quickplay-transistor/

An emotional gut-punch of a game, Actual Sunlight tells us the story of Evan Winter, a young man struggling with depression. Wonderfully written, the game captures the existential angst of modern life perfectly without ever being over the top. As a piece of interactive fiction Actual Sunlight is powerfully moving and the emotional impact stayed with me long after I finished it. Definitely the weirdest game of the year, Hatoful Boyfriend probably isn't for everyone. An avian dating simulator on the surface, you play as the only human in a school for gifted birds. While the school term progresses, you get to know some of the feathered friends that share the classroom with you, with the ultimate goal of starting to date one of them. That's already odd enough, but then each bird has a choose your own adventure type backstory that range from the ridiculous to the sublime. If this hasn't put you off, it's well worth a look!

Grundislav Games and Wadjet Eye games team up to make a period point and click adventure set in the Roaring Twenties. You play as Alfie Banks, a smooth talking salesman, whose desire to make it big in the real estate business leads him to make some life changing decisions.

A lot of fun to play through, and with some novel twists in the puzzles, it's definitely worth a look.

Sproggiwood was a big surprise for me. A cute-looking turn-based dungeon crawler that hides surprising depth thanks to a variety of characters and a fairly unique loot system, the game kept me playing for quite a few hours. Procedurally generated dungeons, a splash of humour and lots of colour make it a nice way to spend your time. If you've ever felt like smacking a slime to death with a shovel, this is the game for you. Read more: http://goplaythat.com/2014/10/25/quickplay-sproggiwood/

A mind-bending, fox collecting puzzle game you say? An intriguing puzzle game with a nice atmosphere and great art. Long enough that you get value for money. If you like Portal etc, this is worth a look. Full review here:

Early Access Review
Plays like a slower 2 character, tactical version of Hotline Miami with an isometric view, cool art and a very nice soundtrack! Rough edges abound at the moment, but worth checking out!

A great point and click adventure game, full of personality and lovely artwork. Puzzles are not too difficult, but they do make you think!

Runers is a really fun top-down dungeon shooter with a lot of unpredictability. Character creation and spell combinations are really cool, and the game is pretty addictive.

The game centres on Bwana, a pilot and gas station attendant who gets involved with a mysterious plot involving gangsters, his missing father and a strange book. Full of life and warmth, and featuring puzzles that tease the brain rather than frustrate, TJD is a lovely experience.
