This is complicated man,

I know I am biased. I love Bethesda, they have produced content that has invigorated my imagination and immersed me in unforgettable gaming moments. I am unapologetic in this.

Starfield is a complicated game for me.

One of the best things about Bethesda games has been the exploration, stepping away from a population hub and just exploring the open world and running into unexpected adventures.

Starfield has those moments, sometimes but not like it used to have.

Traversal or arguably lack thereof, has a pretty devastating impact to the wonderment in a space game. You are only ever in your ship in orbit.

Space traversal in games is hard to pull off. But Starfield doesn't even try. "Orbit" doesn't really feel like space. It's all cutscenes and fast travel, which too be frank, breaks my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ heart. My inner child gleamed at the idea of a Bethesda space game, I just wish my imagination is what came to fruition.

I don't care if they add it with mods. Mod creators can't write for ♥♥♥♥.

All of that Bethesda magic, all of that potential great gaming moments they could orchestrate. All those interesting stories and potentialities will go forever unexplored.

It's not interesting or fun or exciting for a city guard to tell me about a distress signals coordinates. What the ♥♥♥♥ kind of immersion is that man?

Bethesda has left out one of the best elements of their past games. It appears, in fleeting moments. It creates an illusion of the scale you wish you could experience tangibly.

Starfield is not a bad game, but it's really hard to get past the exclusion of space traversal. I'm reminded whenever I build out a cool ship, or when I establish a network of outposts.

Outside of that crushing heartbreak, Bethesda does make a few repeat mistakes. Specifically an overbearing and heavily scripted main quest line that leans in extreme bias to good person playthroughs. It also has game mechanics locked behind it. Which sucks. Skyrim, fallout 4, Oblivion. At least Oblivion's was interesting.

There is also a problem with immersion in this game, absolutely not persistent. Entirely from a roleplaying perspective, it can feel hard that you are "in character" during certain instances. This is a common Bethesda L. The game simply has no mechanism that allows it, and writing can feel very biased to a particular disposition. However, I have also embraced the idea of my character "growing" and changing over time. Making different decisions and changing from them. Which works well with the perceived scale of the game. Lean into the freedom of growth and embracing new moments. It works out really well in Starfield. A passing hero in one system, a Drug smuggler and street kid in another.

I think the goods have been echoed enough, so I wont describe how the game redeems itself overall. As why it's a positive review.

I do like Starfield, but not like their other games.

I wish it was that special. It just isn't.

Good looter shooter, viable for solo play.

Drawbacks are no matchmaking for raid, poor in game coms, (you wanna use disco to get a group or clan) some legionaries are locked behind certain content (darkzone, raids, missions, etc)

Gameplay loop while leveling can get repetitive but clearing checkpoints and strongholds is fun later on. Things REALLY open up in end game. You get skill trees at level 30 so if you feel limited while leveling just wait.

One of the best things about this game is that it really does feel like it was built for endgame primarily. You have hundreds of hours of stuff to do.

If you own it already, the Steam version is the only one that works on steamdeck but if you have it already and want it on steam you just need standard, also note: steam version is the only one that works on deck and deck performance is good. I locked to 45fps and it very solid. Ubisoft launcher wont work on Deck though they may update this eventually.

Right now out of all looter shooters this is what I prefer. Destiny 2 is constantly in flux with its rotating content and predatory pricing. The genre is definitely limping and this game is approaching end of life, but I still play division 1 on a regular basis and this one now as well since I can have it on my Deck.

Great game. Loot shoot enjoy.

Some tips for new players:

You need to reach level 30 and world tier 5 to get to new york. There are benefits to not boosting, like collecting item appearances and also just experiencing something like 20 hours of content that is genuinely good.

This is a very solid foundation for a single player zombie survival game, at this time I was able to squeeze a solid 10 hours with raiding a single bunker, there are several more, and the developer is consistently releasing updates.

If you can let the graphical style go, there is a lot of fun to enjoy here. You can easily see most of whats to offer within 10 or so hours, but there is a lot more if you want to try to find the very best gear and fully build out a base.
