The controls are a bit wonky by default, and I'm not sure if the wonkiness can be fixed when using an XBOX One controller. The DLC prices are insulting to my intelligence. It's the kind of pricing that makes me wonder if they're proactively trying to encourage piracy.

I've not yet beaten the game, but the story mode thus far is pretty mediocre by fighting game standards (fighting game stories generally being VERY bad.) The controls, though mapped strangely seem pretty solid. The counter system is a bit trickier / requires more precise timing than some previous DOA games.

My dual Geforce 670 GTX setup occasionally has frame rate visibly dip, but generally stays well within a playable frame rate. The lack of online play is a bummer, but hopefully won't completely suck on release of the feature.

The lack of current gen console features is rather dissapointing, especially when compared to some of the very smoothly done ports like Metal Gear Solid.

If you're a fan of DOA and you don't do console gaming anymore, this is worth picking up. If you have a current gen console, this may not be worth the investment. I also hear you need a beefy rig to maintain decent framerates. Also, the game doesn't support 2560x1440 resolution for some odd reason. Annoying.

The new and improved jiggly bit system that made it to PS4 and XBOX ONE are apparently absent in this, so that's a minor gripe (there's this thing on the internet called porn-o-graphy, I hear).

Thus far, no real must have mods have popped up (the nude mods don't look very good, so I've no interest), though there's a Shemue mod that looked kinda fun. If and when modders figure out how to make and import new costumes, I'd be really curious to see what cool stuff folks come up with.

Until then, this game is worth recommending to fighting game fans, but with reservations. If jiggly boobs and special effects are more important to you than a decent fighting system, this version of the game may dissapoint. From my limited experience thus far, it seems like a pretty good fighting game with a decent (though not great) port. My biggest gripe is the devs need to pull their heads out of their butts and price the DLCs reasonably.

Fun overhaul of one of my favorite 90s games. Sadly, as of this writing there are some significant bugs that prevents level completion, unless you do some levels in a very specific way (like on the Galactic Core level's "destroy source of gravity field" not being obtainable if you kill the gravity wells "too quickly".)

There are a number of other smaller bugs, such as ships (especially destroyers) failing to stand down when set to passive mode, thus blowing up things your salvage corvettes are tugboating back to the mothership. The asteroid level oddly kills all your fighters (because they apparently don't know to fly around big rock things?) Fighter class ships now seem to be almost completely useless in general. Your squads also seem to suck at maintaining formations now. I get the impression that the cloaked fighters are also bugged / not cloaking when you toggle cloak mode. In general, this feels like a beta that was rushed out the door.

If you can live with the bugs, it's worth a shot. The game was classic for a reason: good soundtrack, good voice acting, pretty good play mechanics, and a relatable and fairly interesting story.

I wish they added an "auto repair" function to the repair ships, but oh well. An auto-loot all the resources button after clearing a stage of enemies would have also been welcomed. As of now, you still have to stick around (or go make a sandwhich or five) while your resource gatherers putz around rounding up the last few rock chunks on most levels.

I like that I can still salvage the hell out of enemy ships to build my fleet.

This is a rather unique game. Having played lots of JRPGs on PS1 and PS2, I'd honestly have to say I've never encountered game play mechanics quite like this. Though much of the story is presented in a somewhat manga inspired "talking heads" panels format, the game is suprisingly polished in so many ways. The stylized "drawn" graphics, the comic book text sound effect words hovering over things in game, along with a nice bit of background information on characters, weapons, and the world available to read, and a story that's (thus far) been pretty fun all contribute to the game's uniqueness.
The combat system is also interesting, combining third person perspective real-time control elements with turn based strategy elements.
Though by no means difficult, the game does offer a reasonable challenge on first play through, requiring thoughtful consideration of how much you want to upgrade your troop's levels through repeatable skirmishes. There are often a few approaches to combat situations depending on how you utilize your "orders" (aka special temporary buffs) and class types.
I've not quite beaten it yet, and though the story has a rather cliche love interest as a dominant part of the storyline, it's been a fun game thus far.
Definately worth grabbing for $5 to $10 if you appreciate the art of game design. They did a lot of things right in this one, and the PC port is pretty solid (though I suggest using a control pad for moving your tank around. The controls get a little weird on tank movement if done with a mouse.)

I caught this one on Steam sale and it's turned out to be a true gem.

If you find most platformers dull and repetative, STFU adds a fun twist to the old formula that makes it a pleasant surprise to play... and also lets you try (and regularly fail) to fix your mistakes.

The presentation is fun, the game's entire premise is clever, and the humor is witty. It's the first platformer to really catch my attention since Fez.

Worth paying full price for. A definate must if on sale.

The short:

Artfully crafted, often whimsical, and thought provoking, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a great example of game as a narrative, visual, and audio storytelling artform. The game is short, but is definately worth picking up. There are a few small hiccups (occasionally it can be difficult to figure out how to progress the story) and a bit of a pacing issue in the mine, but otherwise this game is gem.

9/10

The long:

As others have said, this is a short game. 5 to 6 hours for most folks if you don't reference a guide. The closest thing that comes to mind to this title is the wonderfully artful Dear Esther, though this has more interactivity.

The texture work is EXCELLENT and greatly added to the immersiveness of the fairly closed world you have access to. The game is great looking, in other words.

The pacing is relaxed and at your own leisure except for part of the mine, which some folks complain about. Though not hard, the pacing of a portion of it is... very different / somewhat jarring and may detract from the experience for some. One or two other occasions had me not sure how to progress, but generally I could figure out what to do next.

This is a more accessable example of "a game as an artform." If you like games, art, or prefer your games at your own pace and NOT running around pointing a gun at everything, this is worth catching on sale.

Despite the litany of fanboy positive reviews, I was a bit dissapointed in The Stick of Truth.

It was pretty funny, but there's not a lot to it. I've gathered all the chinpokomon and grabbed nearly every single item in a fairly casual 16 hours. There aren't many sidequests. The controls aren't bad, though I have no idea how hard it would be do use "magic" (aka farting) without a control pad. Combat is rather simple, though it requires a decent twitch response. You don't really need to invest a lot of time in gear optimization, though some of the gear is amusing looking.

With the game being so limited in content, it's hard to suggest paying much for this game. I caught it in a Steam sale for around $12 and almost feel like that was a bad deal.

I recommend this with reservations. Catch it on sale, but only if you're a fan of South Park or RPGs.

An excellent game. Once I learned this was set in the Fables universe, I had to pick it up. As I expect from a story in Fabletown, the characters and writing are excellent.

I love how the pacing of the game was fairly relaxed, which problably heightened the dramatic impact of the story. It's also frustratingly rare to see games really made for adults (rather than just doing another thin-plotted shoot-em' up), making this all the more appealling.

If you like narrative focus, aren't interested in constant twitch gaming, and find inventory management annoying... buy this. It's a good deal when on Steam sale. Expect 7 to 8 hours for a playthrough. Short, but worth it. The story is captivating enough that you may want to invite spectators.

At first glance, the game is based around an utterly absurd concept: be that guy that checks papers at the border and deny entry to those without the proper papers.

Play it a bit, and you'll notice that It's one of those rare games that makes you think about and/or appreciate something more in real life. I have a lot more respect for paper pushers after just a little time in this game. The way the world is presented (through a rather narrow lens) is also quite provocative.

Worth picking up while on sale.

This is a great bang-for-the-buck game that combines tower defense and first (or third) person shooter ideas into a fun little package. Worth catching while on sale. Fun to play with friends.

The under-advertised feature of being able to do local drop-in and drop out co-op with up to four players is a GREAT feature... and one I didn't even know was possible until someone mentioned it in game. You can utilize this with both offline AND online play. It's also a great way to power-level your own characters! Have a big bad level 80+ and you want to get a different class up in level and gear quickly? Plug in a Xbox 360 or Xbox One controller, hit start, and let them idle on a hard map you've mastered a defense build for.... Maybe even slap a rubber band on the shoot button, and let the game's auto-targeting hit anything somewhat in front of your lowbie. (The game seems to auto-target assist with a control pad by default... though not with a mouse and keyboard.)

The story isn't particularly great, though it is a nice touch. Once you figure out the "trick," many of the maps are pretty easy (though figuring out the best way to utilize your limited points for building defenses is one of my favorite aspects of the game.)

Unfortunately, there are points in the game where you will likely hit a gear curve, forcing you to repetatively grind a previously beaten map on increasingly harder difficulty settings to unlock better gear. Later levels and especially the expansion can be VERY challenging on "nightmare" difficulty. Or, you can look around at other player's shops and try to find some gear to buy. (Sadly, most players GROSSLY overprice the gear in their personal shops.)

The ability to unlock and select difficulty levels for maps is a definate plus. The 6 hero types (I'm not counting the mostly the same gender "alternatives") allow for different approaches to the maps, though true master builders will learn to combine the tower / defense types to really clobber harder levels and higher difficulty settings (a small hint: BUFF BEAM).

I spent a ton of time in this game and originally caught it a long time ago for like $5. It's been one the best game purchases I've made in terms of value alone. It's a pretty fun little game to boot. Go buy it already.

The Short:
9/10
Excellent game with a strong story, fun character customization, and a decent combat system. One of the few games I've been coming back to in order to see what's next (a rare thing for me, these days.)

The Long:
This story driven game is probably one of the best I've played in years. With a gripping story line, a sense of consequences for your actions (it reminds me a bit of Mass Effect trilogy, in this regard), and regular little rewards for the curious... it's turned out to be a very engrossing little game. (I'm on the last mission at around 32 hours of play time).

No, the graphics aren't wiz-bang, chummers, but they do the job. The combat system is obviously based on a pen and paper system, your teammates are unique (as well as have their own personal stories), and you can build your character how you want to as you play through (with corresponding rewards and dialogue options being unlocked, depending on your skills). This game evolves around what so many current-generation games fail to think about: THE STORY.

If you like a narrative focused games with good character developement, this is definately worth considering... ESPECIALLY if you catch it on Steam sale (I think I got it for like $3 U.S.).

There is a recurring bugs that pops up (trying to move a character to a hex directly above a teammate's position is almost impossible) that is annoying, but the game has otherwise been stable, playable, and fun.

I never really got into pen and paper RPGs, but I did read the rule books for a few (Shadowrun included), and enjoyed seeing aspects of that world brought to life.

My biggest complaint? That you can't do local or online co-op or multiplayer. I greatly prefer playing games with friends. Maybe we'll see more of this in the future.

Lastly... say "hi" to Knight-King Phil for me. I'd also encourage you to be nice to him if you meet him while running in the shadows ;)
