The Steam community seems to have a problem with over-rating rogue-likes. Don't get me wrong, this game is good, and really fun, but 95% positive is stretching it. When I buy a game like that, I expect an amazing experience, but there's so many small changes that could be made here, to make huge improvements. I feel like it could have used longer in development before being fully released.

Firstly, the big assertion with this game is 'you get yourself into terrible situations, then figure out how to get yourself out of them'. But if you're like me, and play cautiously, that's not really how the game works. There's never a need to go out of your way to do anything you're not equipped for, you can progress through the game just fine by taking small risks for less credits.

I don't really think you would have to think hard to find your way out of situations to begin with. It takes little more than a glance to see the details of a mission and if you're properly equipped for it or not. Guards patrol by themselves, down hallways and out of the sight of other guards. Even if you run into a room with two guards, two melee weapons makes you practically unstoppable against them. The quicker they strike, the more guards you can approach with ease. Even alert and time-limits, clearly added to give the game more difficulty, are completely negated for the rest of the mission by taking out the pilot of the ship

Then, even when you do get caught and attacked, they just throw you out of their ship instead of killing you outright. You pick yourself back up, and either resume the mission or abandon it, with no real penalty. The core difficulty for this game just doesn't really exist in the way the developers assert, nor how a lot of players would like you to believe. It's more reliant on you not caring about your choices until they get you into trouble, and playing careless, or even getting yourself into bad situations on purpose.

For those reasons alone I would not recommend this to people who 'try-hard' at the games they play. It's just a massive decrease in enjoyment for people like that.

And, realistically, there's not even a huge penalty for taking the easier missions, because there's no way of knowing what missions will hold the weapons and equipment that are actually worth picking up. The weapon and equipment system is completely RNG, but not really that varied. There's a couple of melee weapons, a few guns, and several gadgets, and most of the 'rogue-like' qualities for them is how quickly they fire, the range, and how loud they are. The good ones completely over-shadow the ones that are 'meh', and it leads to just doing several missions until you find weapons you can actually use on the tougher missions.

And the problem of variety doesn't just stop at equipment, characters themselves basically all play exactly the same. The tiny variations in starting equipment rarely makes a difference in the long run, which means each run is more-so dictated by what you manage to pick up while you play as the characters you've selected. Only the final mission offers any real static difference between them, and of course, you can't see what the mission will require of you until after you've been playing as them and gotten enough credits to get intel on that mission.

So let's talk about the changes I feel should be made to make this game deserving of that 95% rating.

First of all, increased equipment variety would make a huge change. Once there's a greater variation in equipment, they can stop handing out items that don't even feel like they were worth picking up in the first place. The goal should be, almost every find means you have a new way of approaching your situations, rather than 'I'll use this until I get a better one'.

Secondly, I do believe they should leave the universe as-is for a 'normal' mode. It's clear that people do have fun here, and a lot of casual players aren't going to be interested in the variety and difficulty that would be offered in my recommendations for a 'hard' and 'very hard' universe.

A hard universe needs to, first and foremost, stop pulling punches with the guards on a ship. There should be fewer single-patrol guards, and it would be ideal to replace them with multi-patrol guards. Each ship should have a number of back-up pilots that are detailed in the mission select screen, and each back-up pilot should go to the primary flight controls to take the helm once it's discovered that the pilot is missing. Perhaps adding some 'blood-hungry' guards that kill you on sight outright would also be a good idea, and this would also be listed in the mission briefing.

Next, the characters should be offer more variations in gameplay. Have characters that walk slower or faster, refuse to use melee weapons or guns or certain equipment, or get 'nautious' after they kill or die faster in the vaccume of space. Give all of them one or two negative traits, and perhaps ocassionally a positive one, so that every character feels unique, and must be played in a unique way.

Hard mode should also not mention details on enemy equipment, other than including if you need armor piercing weapons in the basic mission details. Increased enemy variations for all modes would also be great, and add a lot more flavor to the aspect of this change. After a number of failed missions a character would be forced to retire, meaning that doing well would actually be a requirement to progress, and you could no longer fall back on just abandoning your goal if you think it's too hard.

Very hard mode would offer MORE negative traits for characters, and NO mission details, other than the primary and side objectives for that mission. Credits offered would give you a general idea of the difficulty, but even the overall time limit would have to be discovered upon arriving at the ship. This would make every mission more tense, and really give a sense of accomplishment once you've done enough with your character to feel comfortable retiring them. Additionally, the back-up pilots would go to any available flight-control once there is an alert of an intruder on the ship.

I know that just having a thumbs down is doing to net me a lot of 'not helpful' replies, but honestly, I write this review because I want to see this game be better. I love the foundation, I just think there's so many improvements that could be made to move it from 'good' to 'great', or even higher.

If you find yourself interested in spite of what this review mentions, I would say buy it when it's on sale. Otherwise, wait to see what happens in post-launch.

If you know what a theme park sim game is like, then you know what to expect here. It doesn't break the mold in any grand way, but it accomplishes what it sets out to, and does it well. It's a good game, and one that I would call the true successor to the RCT series, but limit your expectations. Once you start making money you won't go bankrupt, even in the hardest difficulties. There is a lot of micromanagement to be done, but it's all about min-maxing and adding to your profits, not succeeding overall.

The campaign and any challenges presented within, or in other modes, are overly simple, and mostly just a way to earn small cash rewards. Since cash is usually overflowing, it's not much of a thrill. In general, there's not much of a feeling of accomplishment to be had in this game, outside of making your park look nice. The positive about that is that the game looks really good, so making your park look nice is fun, and rewarding in it's own way. The negative is that there's no place to design assets outside of playing the main modes in a park, the game could have greatly benefited from an asset/blueprint building mode. I always intend to build assets as I go, but then I get caught up in the park management part of the game, and think 'I'll come back to it'... I never do. :P

I also feel that a major issue is the slightly meager offering on set pieces. A few dragons, a few knights, a few pirate, a few soldiers, every category has a very finite amount of set pieces to use before you'll have to start re-using them. So not only does it feel like each theme is lacking on set pieces, but that there aren't exactly a ton of themes anyway.

Luckily free content updates are slowly fixing this issue, and the ability to make your own assets and download some from the workshop helps a lot. Just don't expect it to be the ultimate fix, there's only so much you can do with the given pieces, and the fact that you can't scale a lot of the pieces to fit your needs boggles my mind. Take a restroom sign for instance. If you want to use it you have to use it exactly as it was made, there is no making it bigger or smaller, you can only rotate and move.

(IMPORTANT EDIT: Free content updates are gone, paid DLC is here to stay. I always feel kind of bamboozled when I buy a game that seems like they're going to be doing all free updates to address issues like the lack of set pieces, and then they whip out the paid DLC once they've garnered the sales. I do understand that continued development has related costs, but the game was LACKING those set pieces to begin with, so the DLC feels like you need it to complete the experience.

As if that wasn't bad enough, the paid assets ruin the workshop. If you accidentally use a workshop item that uses a DLC part, then the game will lock you out of saving your park. There's no warning attached AFAIK, you're just screwed. And of course the most hardcore and extreme creators will be using those DLC assets, because the base assets are limited. If the DLC wasn't so vastly overpriced, I may have let this slide... It's now clear that they're planning to milk their new cash cow for everything it's worth, playing off of your nostalgia for theme park sims, and then charging you extra for the full experience. The two-faced attitude post release is disgusting

Highly disappointed, would refund if I could, and changing my review.)

But yes, while it has it's issues and limitations, I would (NOT) recommend this game to people who like theme park sims. It's not a major leap forward in any area aside from graphics, but it will scratch the itch for this particular genre pretty well if you can deal with the lack of challenge. The question you really have to ask yourself is, do you really need to upgrade, or will heading back to an older game that accomplishes pretty much the same thing do it for you? Mostly this game is an upgrade in the graphics department, so if you're unsure you might want to wait for at least a $20 price point before jumping in.

Good game, but I wish it gave more feedback. Sometimes it seems like certain builds work, then similar builds don't, and there's no glaring or highlighted error... You either have to hope for a lightbulb moment or start your build over. More elaborate tooltips would have went a long way too. Still a lot of fun, but I wish there was something built in to say 'this is why that build doesn't work'.

I started this game because of getting cheap dlc through humble, and because I really enjoyed past Puzzle Quest games. At first I was pleasantly surprised. It's easy to enjoy early on for the single player content. When you first start out, gem matching in treasure hunt is fun, rpg and team building mechanics are solid, and there's a persistant flow of rewards incoming.

Unfortunately you eventually realize those rewards are like the devs dropping pennies on you and telling you you're getting rich. You are actually endlessly grinding for 'pennies' to get the occasional quarter, and banking on RNG in the hopes of making actual progress with a drop that fits into the meta. Souls, which is how you level your troops, come slow no matter what you do. Once you realize this the fun really winds down. Not only are the rewards you're getting less fulfilling than you originally thought, but you can forget team experimentation, because you're forced to only level up the most pertinent troops.

So like most free to play titles you either have to invest an extremely substantial amount of time or money to get to a point where you can play competetively. Over 100 hours on record, 10 dollars spent and a DLC pack, and I'm still decimated by most teams in Guild Wars. At this same juncture, base campaign mode has become too easy, and thus unenjoyable, and because I see how slow and unrewarding 'progression' actually is, it feels boring overall. I have had 0 mythic troop drops in my time playing, none of the be-all end-all cards I'm seeing in high-end PVP, and only 3 legendaries. That's across over 100 hours, and thousands of chests opened.

'VIP Rewards' push the pay to win/progress mechanic further, requiring you to spend $130 to even access the level of chests where you have fair chance of getting the best troops, and offering other incentives that almost feel unfair to people that just want to enjoy what the game has to offer... and should be offering.

This is why I hate free to play, it turns gaming into a rich man's experience. Unfortunately it works because little spoiled brats and the 1% can shell out plenty enough to make it worth it for the devs. Poor and budget gamers lose out in these kinds of games, almost always, and instead of being naive early on, and thinking this game was different because of the falling pennies, I should have realized all of this going in. I would have much rather of spent $20 and gotten a game I could have enjoyed because it was balanced to play from start to finish before jumping into competetive play. Instead they expect me to spend $130 or more to enjoy competetive, and freaking ruin the campaign by balancing it based on their online-only, keep the mindless player's attention by easy wins, invest to progress system.

This title just isn't worth that kind of money. In it's current state, it's really not worth any, IMO. Stick to the original Puzzle quest titles and avoid this.

I kept hearing people calling this 'an Assassin's Creed that doesn't suck', but I wouldn't really call it that. It has some of the assassination and stealth elements you would find in an AC game, but is not quite as defined as a stealth game. This feels far more akin to the Batman Arkham games, and because it's published by WB Games perhaps that should not surprise.

The thing is, it's also it's own thing. Forming an actual creed of assassins is something that never really felt fleshed out in the AC games. You could recruit random nobody NPC's, and send them on missions, or call them in to help or do an assassination, but it never really felt like you were part of, or formed, a creed or actual brotherhood.

This game absolutely destroys AC on that front, because not only do you form your team of orcs, but they aren't just nobody NPC's, they have personality. They have differences that effect gameplay and make them unique. You can find the ones you want, recruit them, and help them rise to the top.

On top of that, the gameplay is just fun. It's a slightly more strategical take on the combat you'd expect from the Arkham games, with a touch of the AC style stealth. The word of the day is choices, because you can approach every situaiton in so many different ways. There's a fun progression system, and planning who to attack, how, and what to do with them is awesome.

My one complaint is that this game is far too easy. You start out quite skilled, and you only grow in power from there. Perhaps if you're not used to AC or Arkham you would find it more difficult, but as a skilled vet at both of those franchises it's rare to feel that I'm being challenged. When I do die it's because I was because I was almost purposefully careless, not because I tried a strategy and it failed. The area designs leave a lot to be desired in the way of challenge, and the cone of vision on the enemies is laughable.

The map design in general is nothing memorable. I know Mordor may be a bit of a bleak setting, but the world in general feels of a lower budget and quality, perhaps even rushed. The second area is a big improvement on the first, but not enough that I would call it great. Of course I'll take the enjoyable gameplay being put first, but it would have made for a grander picture if both were so engaging.

Overall I've really enjoyed the game so far, and will enjoy completing it... It's currently on sale for $4, which is an absolute steal. I really look forward to the sequel, where I hope difficulty, world, and overall challenge will be a lot more noteworthy.

Not once have I regretted backing 20XX. Consistant updates, wonderful developers, and a fantastic game that already trumps most indy games that I have played.

It's done nothing but improved since I've been playing it, and I can't wait for 1.0, when I intend to really sink my teeth in and play with friends. :3

One of the most all-around useful things on Steam. I can't stand when games don't let me choose a monitor to full-screen on, or minimize when I click another window. This app solves both those problems with a few easy clicks. No settings to change, no hassle.

I had no idea about this game until it popped up on the steam charts. I'm so glad I noticed it, because it was one of the best games I've played all year, and a new favorite among it's stealth-based brethren. I'm going to try and write a brief review covering the things I look for in reviews.

First, the positives.

The gameplay is fantastic. Try the demo, if you like it, expect it to only get better. Each of the 13 levels is unique, and a lot of them present a twist of some sort on the core formula. The 5 characters all offer very unique talents, and are available at different points in the story, and sometimes different points of the maps. This leads to a lot of versatility in gameplay, and it also lets you play each level in a variety of ways, accommidating a few different playstyles.

The game is good in length. I've heard of some finishing it in around 25 hours, but as someone who tries to complete stages without being spotted I had well over 35 hours, and plan to go back. There's a lot of replay value in the form of badges to earn in optional objectives in each mission. Some are simple, others sound near impossible, but I would certainly like to try and get them all, because it's just a fun game to play and I welcome the challenge.

The presentation in this game is fantastic. It looks great, and sounds great. The base of the story is nothing special, but the way it is told through it's characters is engrossing and really pulls you in. The voice acting is solid, and the dialog and character interactions had me interested the whole way through. I saw some of the plot twists coming, but the results of them are really striking. Other story points were presented in subtle hints, leaving you to work them out yourself. I enjoyed this aspect of the game a lot, and it has a very fitting soundtrack to go along with it.

Now the negatives.

The controls can ocassionally be annoying and finicky, and the camera angle often gets in the way. It's nothing you can't work around, this game is built on quick-saving and that really helps when something goes wrong. I honestly don't know how they could have fixed it overall, but expect to ocassionally have to quick-load just because you clicked the wrong thing at a really bad time. Especially when timing is key.

Furthermore, I like that you can que up a move for each character and then execute them all at once, but they don't always work out as you'd expect. There's no way to set them up to be perfectly timed if your characters aren't standing in the spot they need to be to execute their action, and it can sometimes be really difficult to tell just where that spot will be. And when timing is a factor, it would have been nice to have a feature where you can que several actions for any characters and then execute those actions singularly, with click on the icon in the sidebar. These are small things in a much bigger picture, but I have to admit they lead to some frustration on ocassion. I would have greatly appreciated the ability to pause the action and issue commands, even if it were disabled in hardcore mode, I think that would have made a very nice change.

A more serious problem is the game's load times. The first time you load a level it takes a very long time. To the point that the loading screen even says you can wait 'up to a minute', but in my experience it's a bit longer than that! Quick-loading is generally pretty fast, but a couple of the larger levels cause it to be a bit slower, and one level in particular I'm pretty confident I was waiting over 30 seconds each time I hit F8 after reaching a certain point.

A smaller complaint is that badges aren't much different than achievements. Often developers make these kinds of challenges unlock artwork, skins, bonus levels, or something of the sort, but I don't think they actually do anything not tied to achievements. I really would have appreciated the added incentive, even if the gameplay is enough for me personally.

Finally, while I did like how different each mission felt because of available characters, I would have liked it if more of the missions had made use of all 5 characters. I was also vastly disappointed when a certain character became unavailable for a large chunk of the game. It made sense for the story, but it was one of the more unique and fun characters to use, and I found myself wishing they had brought in another character with similar abilities for that portion.

So I guess that's about it. I mean I'll add that I'm craving even more than they gave us, but can't really call that a negative. This game is great, and I would recommend the demo to anyone. And if you like the demo I would definitely pick it up at some point!

Thanks for reading. ^^

As a 'video game', I don't recommend it. It just personally doesn't fit my criteria for what makes a game a game.

As a work of art and a narrative experience, I recommend getting the Ultra deluxe version instead. It's the same thing, but more. Both are funny, clever, witty, and interesting. I can appreciate it more now that I'm older.

But I'd also say wait until it's at a price-point you're willing to pay for a 2 - 5 hour narrative experience. Thems the breaks, Galactic Cafe. Your satirical commentary on video game reviews might get me to come back and alter a review 7 years later, but it ain't gonna make me any less of a straight shooter. :P
