Quality of the remake seems great so far.
If they can keep it up for the whole game,
I'd consider this a must-have for all fans of the original series.

A nice little game to relax, that also has the potential to push you for a new highscore.

At this point, I am a long-time rally-fan, begining with Colin McRae Rally (CMR) 2005, which in my opinion was a very good game, providing a lot of diversity in terms of stages (Australia, Greece, Spain, Japan, ...) and vehicle classes (Historical, Group A, Group B, 2000s, ...). It also had a decent career mode which led you from local, low-budged rallying through all the different licenses to the WRC-ish top. I was not a big fan of DiRT 2 and 3 and was waiting quite a time for a game to match CMR 2005.

So when DiRT Rally was released and marketed as "a step back to the roots of the series" I bought it in an instant. I wanted to see if it could live up to one of my favorite racing games of my childhood. At first glance it was perfect. No X-Games, PR-events, rewinds or any of the normal DiRT stuff. Just plain rallysport with all (in)famous vehicle classes, classic stages and all the fine-tuning you could ask for. And I really enjoyed it, and still enjoy it. The handling and the feddback you get from the vehicles are great and always seem to fit.

There are just a few things that are missing in my opinion and that most of the other rally-games out there seem to have. Things that would enhance the experience a fair bit and give some more challenge and/or variety:

No changing surfaces
Every stage of one country has the same road surface (Greece: Gravel, Germany: Concrete, ...) and they do not change over the course of it. I remember the difference in handling you went through on a german stage in CMR 2005, your car going from gravel to asphalt to concrete and cobblestone and back, all in one stage, forcing you to account for this in your setup.
DiRT Rally seems to have forgotten about this possibility with one exeption: The icy bits at Monte Carlo (which are well made).

Reduced menu visuals
In CMR 2005 (or DiRT 4 for a more modern comparison) the tuning and repair screens showed you car and the impacts of your actions and settings. Cars have to be bought from dealerships where you can take a good look at the car first. In DiRT Rally this is all reduced to text, sliders and occasional pictures. I takes away a big chunk of the atmosphere and I for my part really like racing games that can transmit the feeling of "attending a race event". I don't expect a walkable menu like in DiRT 2, but a bit of visual love can get you a long way to immersion.

No real campaing/story
Even though there was no real story in CMR 2005 too, at least it had some more progression and achievements to be claimed. In DiRT Rally you can attend every vehicle class from the start if you have to money and if you win a championship in a class you get promoted to the next one up, which changes nothing exept the AI-stage-times getting better. I lost my interest in those events pretty fast.

BUT:
Until now this might sound like I would give this game a bad or at least mediocre rating á la "4/10 would not buy again",
but thats because every other aspect of the game is great and what you would expect it to be from a high-standard rally simulation. Nonetheless I have some things I did not expect and am very happy about:

Rallycross
In recent times, Rallycross has gotten its much needed attention and so it is represented in DiRT Rally.
And not only partly: Three different classes, official Championships and official tracks make a fully-fledged part of the game which provides some head-to-head races which can be a nice change from the core gameplay.

Hillclimb
I did not know that this was a thing until DiRT Rally brought it to table.
The official Pikes Peak track and a nice selection of hillclimb-cars (peugeot 208 T16, Audi S1 Quattro, ...)
give a great feeling to the challenge of getting you car to the top faster than the other drivers.

Graphics
They really did a great job on the graphics of this game. Even 2-3 years after its release it stands up to brand new titles in the same genre. For me personally, DiRT Rally revived my joy about cockpit views.

Online Challenges
There is a whole range of online challenges, from daily over weekly to monthly in all classes, countries and conditions.
They are a viable way to make money and a fitting way to directly compare your times and skills to others. For me they pose a nice way generating events for me and push me to try stages and/or cars I don't like, like RWD in Snow *shudders*.

Sooooooooo...
If you are a fan of simulation racing and particularly Rally in all its various forms, this is definitely a game for you.
If you are a more casual Racing/Rally fan, you might find DiRT 4 more enjoyable.

I hope I could help out with your decision. Bye :D

The good old classic with new multiplayer support.
If you liked the original back in the days you are probably
going to like this game to. It hasn't really changed and I did not encounter
a bug that was not also in the original title yet.

If you're not into this series or old RTS games in general, you should not touch this.
If you are: 100% recommendation!
