(Warning: This review is by a person who is not picky about what games said person plays.)

"A-woo~oo" indeed.

As part of a Disney-loving family, I watched DuckTales reruns growing up until some older siblings got me the first season on DVD. Some would say it's one of Disneys better animated shows, and I'd agree with them. The original DuckTales game for the NES was also one of the only games I ever played on the NES.

But enough about my backstory...let me tell you why I like this game.


The gameplay is incredibly smooth. The controls are basically the same as that of the original NES game, said controls being Left, Right, Jump, Duck, Pogo Cane, and Menu Access (unless you play the game with Hard Pogo on, then you need to press Pogo Cane and Down at the same time in midair).

Due to this, it's most likely best to play this game with some sort of controller instead of the keyboard.

On top of that, you stop where you think you should stop when you stop, which is a great mechanic for me due to some past experiences in games (curse you past experiences).

The gameplay itself is as simple as the original; collect the diamonds, defeat the enemies, fight the boss, get the treasure.

Some elements have been added to this remastered version, such as completing set tasks before progressing in the level, less or more items being available on different difficulties, and a few mini bosses to name a few.


This game is filled with story while also being true to the story of the original game. Basically, there's 3x more story. I'm also someone who just loves a good story. It's not great, perhaps, but definitely good.

You might as well be watching a DuckTales episode instead of playing a game because this game has voice acting and animated 2D sprites. With subtitles...if you want.

The voice acting was done by all members of the original voice acting cast of the TV show that were still alive at the time the game was made. It's quite nostalgic, to be honest.

It all makes it feel so much like the TV show, all the way from Scrooge and Glomgolds rivalry to Launchpads strangely stupid antics.


If theres one thing that's the most like the original NES DuckTales game, it's the recreation of the levels. Almost every aspect of the levels have been faithfully redesigned into the game.

They're in 3D...which is nice.

The enemies, items, bosses, obstacles, etc. are in the same places as they were in the original, with a little bit of rearrangement (well, as much as I can remember anyway).

The remastered levels are also very pleasing to the eye. They're just so beautiful and colorful...

Some things have been changed, like how to leave levels, for example. Launchpad isn't in his usual spot to give you a lift back home. Instead, you can leave a level whenever you want via the pause menu. Along with this, their's cutscenes and dialogue in various places throughout the game that replace walking up to a sprite and reading the text box that follows.

Secret areas and hidden diamond locations remain the same...I think. It's pretty simple to tell where diamonds might be after a level or two, especially if you've played the NES version before.

There are also two new levels added to this game. The Money Bin, which is a tutorial level, and Mount Vesuvius, which replaces your returning trip to Translyvania to fight the final boss.

The game is a bit time consuming on the harder difficulties. I'd say it takes about 15-20 minutes per level on easier difficulties and 30-40 minutes on harder difficulties and that's if you're not speeding through it.


Music...one of my favorite parts of a game.

The main menu theme, the redesigned levels, the new levels...I love it all...which means I'm not the best person to tell you how good the music is. I don't trust myself enough with scrutinizing music because I like it too much.

The remastered versions are basically the same as the 8-bit ones but with less 8-bit electronic sounds and more...well...modern electronic sounds. The Translyvania level music even has some dubstep in it. You can switch between the two soundtracks at any time you want.


I, for one, do not care much about graphics. I'd rather have a fun time rather than concern myself with how the game looks.

I will tell you that it's a MAJOR improvement from the NES version from 1989-1990...because 2.5D is better than 8-bit as far as games based off of TV shows go.

So colorful...so animated...


A little bit of extra stuff that doesn't really fit into any other category...

• The only glitch I ever found was a game breaking one. The game would freeze upon defeating the final boss and I would have to close the game and restart the level. Incredibly frustrating when I was doing my Extreme Difficulty run. The only fix I found for this was upgrading to Windows 10. No idea why.
  
  
• There are 4 difficulties this time around. The new difficulty is Extreme, which requires you to complete the game without dying AND in one run. It's exactly like the original game. It's also a pain if you want all the achievements as well.
  
  
• It has Steam Achievements and Steam Trading Cards. Yay!
  
  
• There's an Art Gallery where you can view concept art and the like for the game and the television show, as long as you have the money to unlock them.
  
  
• You can dive into Scrooges Money Bin. It's quite entertaining.

DuckTales: Remastered is a throwback to the early 90's for those who were alive at that time (myself not included) and to those who grew up with Disney and an NES (myself included).

It is an incredibly faithful recreation of the original game and a great homage to the television series, which, coincidentally, is being rebooted in the Summer of 2017.

I hear David Tennant is playing Scrooge McDuck. My life is complete.

It's a very enjoyable, short-ish game meant for children, but is still fun for older Disney kids and avid NES lovers nonetheless with difficulties tailored to all ages.

Now where are the DuckTales 2 and Darkwing Duck remastered versions? I mean, really...they should be things.
