Do you like sluggish gameplay and a padded final boss fight? Well neither do I! ♥♥♥♥ this game.

I hate myself for buying and playing this.

But I'd buy and play it again. At least when it goes on sale it actually goes on sale.

You know, I never played it when it was supposedly trash. But now that it's been updated, and the free week has been a thing, I gave it a shot.

Well, that shot became a good 81 cents Canadian spent.

It's not fantastic, but it's definitely not bad. It has a store, but it's cosmetic items. Armor color, hats, capes, that kind of stuff. And... It's $1. There's no reason NOT to get this.

The game launches, it seems great, I click new game... Then I bear witness to easily one of the best introductions since Mass Effect. I won't spoil it, but it's got the touch.

You're quickly thrown into a rather beautifully crafted world rich with detail, and a fair amount of graphic settings to go with it. Even on an entry-level build I was able to average 40-60 frames on medium, and still got 30-40ish when I cranked up the post-processing. So it runs well, for sure.

The gameplay is ridiculously solid. I can hack and slash and cast all sorts of spells, using these to regenerate health with certain upgrades, or keep my distance and use skills with a large arsenal of weapons. Even the Revolver from the start of the game is... Well I slew the final boss with it. The upgrade system isn't unique, but it's certainly useful. Buy an upgrade, save up money, buy a new upgrade, repeat. But every single upgrade feels beefy and serves a purpose. Unfortunately not as much can be said about Ki and Karma upgrades. But they have a lot of use regardless. New abilities, health regeneration, ammo and money become easier to aquire, that sort of stuff. But you'll probably fall into a playstyle that renders a lot of upgrades useless to you. And that's absolutely okay.

The sprint system is coupled with a dash system. Hold shift to perform a dash in the chosen direction, and then keep sprinting. Once I learned to dash, fights became a lot more fun and intense. It won't save you from some attacks, but it will make the game more fun, and when used correctly, can make you a true Shadow Warrior.

Exploring is fun. The story is linear at best, but it sticks true to the old ways and allows for a lot of exploration, and usually rewards you for it! Not many games get to say that these days.

All in all, the game plays solid, it has replay value with NG+ and a truly hardcore mode that's even more difficult than the standard difficulties.

8/10. A lot of effort clearly went into this, and it most definitely pays off. From start to finish the game plays well, even if the occasional corpse looks like a turd.

Got this as part of a Humble Bundle, and it was the sole reason I bought it.

Well, needless to say it's a complete mess. After playing through the tutorial (which is hidden in the options menu, by the way), I got the jist of the scoring system. While constantly trying to put my newfound training to use, I quickly realized that running diagonaly makes the player or AI carrying the ball virtually invincible to most tackles. The AI on the player side seems to know nothing about offense or defense and bumbleclucks its way around the arena while the AI throws the ball at bumpers, stars, and somehow teleports the ball around the arena at unpredictable intervals. (And at one time, right into my goal. Hooray for cheating!)

The power-ups system is nice, except for the part where it's practically useless. I can run faster... Until I get sacked 2 seconds later by a tackle spanning about 10 feet. There also seems to be a complete lack explanation as to what in the apple sauce they do. A purple negative sign? Armor on the ground? A can of... Something with an S on it?

This game had a lot of promise - and I'm sure 23 or so years ago the original was fantastic - but this one isn't.

I cannot recommend this game enough. Even if you're not a fighting game player, the fact it takes 2 buttons makes it easily one of the most accessible games on the market, while retaining a high level of difficulty throughout.

The $5 asking price feels like the game is always on sale given the amount of content available, and the intensity of the fights. Survival mode or Level mode, you've always got things to do, and leaderboards to view.

Have at it, grasshopper.

Early Access Review
Not a bad game to say the least.

It only has 3 maps at the time of writing but they're fairly expansive with many twists, turns, and just generally classic layouts. Throw back to the golden era of Arena Shooters.

10/10 would've paid for if they didn't hand out keys on Facebook like a boss.
