The combat in this game is extremely frustrating.

The game has you get a very high amount of stamina with the genuinely great food system, but regen isnt buffed. This mostly means you just get more time to swing and dodge, and more time to slowly run away from the increasing horde of enemies while just waiting for your stamina to regen.

A way that difficulty is increased is extremely frustrating - lowering this stamina regen you get. It starts raining - something pretty much entirely out of the players control, you get a heavy debuff to stamina regen, and have to just... wait it out or do other stuff. At least until the mountains biome, there is nothing you can do to circumvent this. Nighttime also gives you the cold debuff until the mountain part of the game which further slows your stamina regen.

You also kinda need to have the rested buff as long as you want to fight, preserving it means making little campfire sheds everywhere or rushing around to preserve your main-bases rested bonus, or having another resultant debuff to your stamina.

Jumping - a fundamental part of your movement costs stamina - not in the sense that you cant jump on 0 stamina, but that you NEED 10 stamina to jump. It is extremely frustrating being in the annoyingly likely situation of being cold, wet, unrested, and trying to jump or move anywhere, because any jump below 10 stamina resets your stamina back to 0. You have to wait to enter a base if you have to jump into it.

This is the biggest design flaw with the combat in my opinion, but there are also many ways in which I find it really unrefined and clunky.

Switching weapon while running? If you run again too early, it cancels the action of switching weapon, but DOESNT cancel the animation itself, AND consumes the sprint stamina. Im happy if the animation is commital, not letting you sprint until the weapon switch is done, OR cancelling the animation if you cancel it early, but having both is extremely unrefined and has even killed me a couple times. Annoying to have a full animation play and then start trying to hit an enemy with a pickaxe that i should have just switched from because the game didnt cancel the animation but cancelled the action.

Despite being a 3d game with a heavy melee combat focus, you cant aim melee weapons up and down. You cant even aim a spear poke. However, most of the combat encounters outside of raids you will get will he in hilly or rocky terrain, leading you to either struggle to align both you and an enemy on a slope to align hitboxes, or luring the enemy to a flat area, by which time another 5 have joined the fight. It also leads to fairly ridiculous situations like the spear attack being a direct stab downwards, failing to hit a neck on a shoreline.

The hitboxes are fairly crap across the board. Stone golems dont seem to have a hitbox on their arms - roughtly 2 thirds of their model is arms. Troll attacks have ridiculous size and radius if up close even if you are 4 character lengths away from actually being hit by the model. Enemy attack range across the board is also a bit silly and some attacks like shaman poison is very unclear as to where you will actually get hit by it.

Enemies have completely different rules compared to the player - they have infinite stamina, arent at all affected by rain or other debuffs in the gameworld, miniboss enemies dont really have combatable weaknesses until you are already powerful enough to kill them easily anyway (like they are all a fairly good speed, massive bullet sponges, and hit extremely hard - why are they scaled with mobility, damage, and health all equally???). When swimming, the player consistently loses staminja before starting to drown, and cant use any tools or weapons. Enemies can swim forever, and retain their moveset in the water, They also typically have taller hit ranges so can hit you on a slope while you cant hit them, and will never get tired chasing.

Animals you are hunting have a similar annoyance, deer will never run out of stamina. If they run into water, they will infinitely swim, and even if their died - their hides drop to the ocean floor, in a game that doesnt give you the ability to swim under the water.

Weapons dont feel very varied, each tier of weapon that takes a while of grinding for is an iterative upgrade - its never exciting moving to a higher tier. The grind also needs increasingly more resources as you progress, requireing more and more bars to create basically the same weapons over and over. Only difference ive seen so far is that a copper sword and an iron sword have like 2 pixels in length difference.

So yeah, the grind to get the next tier of gear is pretty miserable too. Silver ore is heavier copper ore - why? is the game better designed for taking longer to mine silver?

While mining for ore in these biomes, you are constantly at risk of one of the miniboss-enemies spawning - they require like 30 hits to kill (if you get on level ground) or like 10-15 with parrying (which is also fairly inconsistent ive found and can knock you back, nullifying how effective parries are) and 2-3 hit you without potions. By the time you are powerful enough to take them on fairly, the combat loop with them mainly consists of standing completely still on flat, parrying or dodging an attack, getting a couple hits in then waiting to react again. They only have 2-3 attacks each, there isnt anything interesting to react to or learn with them. Further, when you are powerful enough to take them on, its time for the boss, ending the area progression and movign onto the next area - starting the whole cycle once again.

The tedium is futher increased with raw metals - the most grindy required resource, isnt able to be teleported.
The refute to people critisizing this is that it incentivises exploration by requiring you to use a boat. However... when you are mining metal, you have already explored to that area to find the metal in the first place. You cant place a portal somewhere you havent already explored. This means that limiting metal going through portals just artificially increasing game time by needing to re-tread paths with... sailing...

The sailing mechanics are genuinely great... in a vaccuum. If the game had boat-boat combat, it would be incredibly fun to use IMO, and add a pretty big layer of strategy. However, carting metal around - most sailing: when the wind is against you - its really annoying zig-zagging and trying to get anywhere, making sail time take twice as long. When the wind is with you, you wait for the game to play itself and browse reels while waiting to for your boat to follow a path you have sailed 3 times in the flat ocean before you can start playing the bloody game again. (in general, all 3 boats ive used are just annoyingly slow and clunky too.)

With the more-fitting exploring aspects of the boat, you can follow coasts and literally let the wind take you, mapping out your world... until you stumble upon a plains biome, and a small, fast moving enemy literally 1 shots you, leaving all of your gear and your ship in a biome far away, making you regrind from potentially square one for a boat to just retrieve your gear and carry on.

The description of this game isnt wrong - it is brutal, but for all the wrong reasons. The combat and progression simply isnt refined enough ("yet" to be thorough because early access, but knowing iron gate i heavily doubt this will change) for the game to be this punishing. Its ludicrously frustrating

I give up trying to like this game. Screw you colin for making me spend 100 hours torturing myself, (love you boo)

The narration was kinda weird and seems to take itself weirdly seriously, and the bit near the end with the crumbling stone platforms kinda goes against what GOI-likes should be with the "every fall is your fault" (if ur reading this, the first encounter just jump over them, the second encounter stick to the right), but overall really enjoyed it.

The rebinding buttons menu in this game is nearly-completely pointless.

There are like 25 different REQUIRED controls for this game, but only 15 configurable buttons on the standard controller. This means some buttons have multiple things bound to them.

However, if you want to at all reconfigure these controls (because they are different to nearly every other souls like and sekiro for some reason), you CANT set your own "conflicting" buttons. Want to swap parry and block? well say goodbye to ascension cable, pull, zipline break and some BD1 ability the game isnt letting me see yet, because you now need 4 extra buttons to accomodate for those because you cant ALSO set them to LT.

60 pounds retail... what on earth...

An early access game with a content DLC.

I love this game since i began playing it, and Ive bought the DLC because I do want to support the developers and it is a free game, but it sets a very worrying precedent. Id rather pay 20 pounds (definitely worth that) for the full game and its content in development than have an early access free game with DLC content packs, because development time has been taken away from the main game people are interested in.

If the game wasnt free id be putting it down now, but the devs do seem to care. I simply dont agree with locking content behind a paywall when the main game is still being developed. Ill still buy future support skin/colour packs, but its the last *content* pack ill be buying. Warning for future players.

"Man im loving need for speed underground (2003) but ive played it like 10 times. Hm im actually gonna try a modern need for speed game, and apparently heat and unbound are the most similar to underground so ill give unbound a go."

*NFS unbound doesnt have controller remapping, a game that came out 19 years after underground, which does...*

We figured out how to make a good racing game a long time ago guys...
