Long ago, in the shadow of the village keep, my closest friend was Robert, the miller’s son. Together, we roamed the fields beyond the castle walls, battling imaginary dragons with wooden swords and shields of willow. One autumn, his father sent him to apprentice with a blacksmith in a distant town, and we clasped hands in farewell, vowing not to forget each other. The seasons turned, and though life carried us on separate paths, I often think of our adventures with a bittersweet smile. Now, as I sit by the hearth, I wonder if Robert still remembers the golden days of our youth.
