Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris, is an RPG that tries to replicate the feeling of the Sword Art Online anime by faithfully following the Alicization arc of the anime for the first chapter of the games, 80-hour long journey.
I was not provided a review copy of this game, I purchased it with my own money and this is my personal review of Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris.
The whole story starts off with Kirito waking up in the Virtual Rath Project known as the Underworld, with no idea how he got there, from here on out the game attempts to retell the story of the Alicization Anime’s first 24 episodes thru the stories first chapter, you relive thru key moments of the TV show such as Chopping down the Gigas tree, all the way up to climbing the cathedral to rescue Alice. You also get to meet new Faces along the way such as Medina Orthinanos, who is introduced during the first chapter of the games main story, and play vital roles in the games original story to come later on.
The Game has 3 types of cutscenes to tell its main story, In Engine Cutscenes, CGI scenes (Which there are only 5 of), and Visual novel scenes the latter of these is used for about 60% of the games main story, and can feel like a drag at points because the game only has Japanese voices, and each of these visual novel scenes can last for up to 2 hours at a time nearing the end of the game.
If you are a sword art online fan, and like the game series for its story modes, and divergence from the anime plotlines, you will love this games story from start to finish, there is a lot of emotional moments throughout the story which are impactful and can keep you on your toes if you can manage to still keep up with the game after all the hour long visual novel scene moments.

Mechanics

After you break free from what feels like almost a 15-20 hour long tutorial you finally beat the first chapter of the game by clearing the Cathedral, and have unlocked Character creation, and multiplayer, and this is where the game really starts to shine.
You can customize your Kirito to look and feel like your own character, although the character creation isn’t as diverse as previous entries character creator, it’s still worth having, however your character doesn’t appear in cutscenes and the game reverts to Kirito’s default appearance in cutscenes, so it feels more of like you are tagging along, and aren’t noticed in Kirito’s story.
Multiplayer is where the game really shines though, be it playing story with your friends, or going off and fighting a Divine Beast for Legendary Class gear, you can do it all as you see fit with your friends in multiplayer.

However, the game seems to be region locked for multiplayer on PC however, there are ways around it, but I wouldn’t recommend using them as playing with people outside my region caused crashes, Anti-Cheat errors and more.

The games combat is extremely engaging, at first the combat starts slow, and feels clunky, but as you progress the story and learn more sword skills and combos, the combat really starts to open up and you get a feel for it and it feels like more than just a hack and slash combo driven game.
For instance, once you get into an animation there isn’t a way to cancel it, you have to finish that animation out, so you have to be really strategic on when and where to use what move during a fight, and not just spamming your skills until the Monster is dead.
The Game also has a diverse choice of weapon types to fit a lot of different people’s playstyles, I myself preferred dual wield which is unlocked after clearing the game’s first chapter.

Performance

Next up on to the games performance. The game had a rocky launch, and suffered countless bugs, like for instance, when you go to fight any whale class enemy on the PC Version of the game, if you are locked onto the target for more than 15-30 seconds the game crashes, or another game breaking bug where in Chapter 3, you complete the objective for the quest, but the story objective didn’t progress, and there is an invisible wall stopping you from progressing. The Game also suffered from constant crashes, and bad frame drops on my PC, however a good chunk of the crashing and frame drops and story progress locking issues seem to have been ironed out as of 1.03 for Xbox/PS4, and 1.03a for PC.

Conclusion

Overall I would rate this game 7/10.
The games story was fun and enjoyable, but dragged on near the games 4th chapter with bad pacing issues and didn’t pick back up engagement for me until the end of the 5th chapter.
The combat is fun and engaging and keeps me wanting to find new ways to play the game.
And the performance issues and rocky launch have seemed to be getting ironed out and the developer promises more fixes.

I Personally would not recommend this if you aren't a sword art online fan.

First off Before I review this just wanna state I'm one of those weird people who are like if it runs just as good as it does on PS4 or Xbox One the Game is alright. So the Game has a 30fps Cap thats one of the huge let downs for everyone, as I don't mind running at 30fps cause im gonna run 30fps on my Xbox if I got it for console so there is that. Second I do think that it is outrageous that people who spend $1200-$2000 On A GPU Like a Titan or a Titan X Can't run the game at a solid 60 on ultra graphics. Now onto the game itself, I did notice as I have a GTX 750 Ti I was running 30fps every where it would dip to 26 sometimes when speeding around in the batmobile that is about it for fps drops. The story is a good one could have had a better plot tho. All and all its a good game and if you don't mind running the game at capped 30fps and about medium settings this game is a good game to get. I would recommend getting it on PC if you can and if you can't just get it on console the story is a good story for a batman game and I want every Batman fan to experience it.
