I loved this game, I used to play it all the time with my friends on survival. I've got several self-made ships in creative that I've spent days of work on.

But I can't recommend it, Keen has sort of sat on its laurels after releasing the planets update years ago. There are a variety of bugs that need to be addressed but instead they keep releasing new DLCs that don't add content to the game.

"The DLCs let you support the creators."
They wouldn't need the support if they ironed out the bugs and improve on features that keep the game alive. There's issues with low sim-speed that make it impossible to play multiplayer. Where you regularly hit the block limits and when you do your game lags.

It's a dying game that its main purpose now is to boot up, go into creative to make something, as a reference for something else.

Edit;

This is something I have said many years ago and I find my opinion has changed now. With the update of Signal, Contact, and other improvements they have really refined the game further. I do hope they continue on this trajectory

The game looks stunning visually however it is desperately lacking in some areas for example; companions, combat, character development, and more!

Now I like the companions, Kurt is sort of like Garrus from ME 2-3. However they don't add anything much to conversation. They have a few lines of text and you can either 1. take their side, 2. take neither. 3. take the other side. They have the odd conversation between each other but it's nothing as interesting as dragon age origins, listening to Alister and Morrigan banter between each other. You can choose to talk to them however there is only usually one topic you can ask them which is you get the same old story about someones father which doesn't change and that will be the only thing you can talk to them about for a while.

Combat is boring. Guns are so over powered you can stun lock a boss and deal huge amount of ammunition to them. ("THAT BATTLE WAS EPIC!" and all you did was shoot maybe 6 rounds into the monster) Enemies spawn in the exact same places and even in places I'm confused about. You get attacked right outside the Coin Guards base, it's basically a police station and people are waiting outside it to try and mug you.

Character Dev I feel is sorely lacking. You spent months on board a ship at sea together. I wasn't expecting or hoping for Assassins Creed BF but I was expecting at least a conversation. Now all your companions have quests to make them like you more you did it but it felt like it didn't really mean anything other than getting that eventual companion skill boost. They don't act different or really change their views.

This is now things I found annoying in the game, you are a Legate, leader of the congregation of merchants and cousin to the prince that has come to this island. It gets you in to places and their attention, but no one gives a flying ♥♥♥♥. In the prologue there's a merchant demanding double the payment for goods to be delivered to your ship. You introduce yourself, as nobility nada. So you go see his boss, and his boss tries to kill you.

The Nauts (sailors) also in the prologue have stored a monster in their hull, ofc it breaks out and you need to fight it. So you kill it ("That battle was epic!" /s) The Naut captain that you're sailing with to the island says something like "Damn I was told that it would be down for a few more days!" So this Captain, brought a monster into dock, it got free almost killed civilians, the princes, you, etc and there is no dialogue asking him "Hey what the ♥♥♥♥?" Nah you just jump on his boat and set sail for a few months, we'll gloss over that.

The 3 cities palaces. They have created 3 amazing cities and what do they do? Have the exact same interior but just slightly different. Exact same rooms, layout, everything but just slightly different. As a Legate you also get a residence in each city. Now that is the same. Somehow every single city built the exact same house for you. I know it's petty but when I look at the rest of the game and go "wow that's amazing" and then come to that it's more of a "really? you couldn't at least work on this?"

Still a good game, never buy at full price. I wish there was a Meh option because that's what it should get.
