They took the foundations built in DOOM 2016 and refined and added even more features for the player to play around with. Its fast paced and hits hard and will not forgive mistakes on higher difficulties. Overall excellent game and refreshing in a day and age where too many games seem afraid to give players real challenge and if the base game isn't hard enough for you the DLCs take it up another notch. The only complaint I can warrant against the game is the platforming stuff. Its really a nit pick and sometimes can be engaging and I believe it allowed id to make levels more open and creative but I can live without it.
