If you ever wondered what it felt like to buy and play a game in the golden era of PC gaming before skinner box design moved in with first day DLC and gacha mechanics, Baldur’s Gate 3 is the closest you may get in the foreseeable future. An award category doesn't exist that adequately encompasses the achievement on display here.

I'm a long time Battlefield player and the Bad Company era is really when it got it's hooks in, so I've seen the highs and lows. I'm also not a particularly dedicated or rabid fan though. I bought 2042, played a bit, then peaced out and decided to give it another look once the game was actually finished.

Well that time is now, and this is a really fun entry into the series. I really do like the weapon attachment system here and that hasn't changed since launch. Being able to hop into a Breakthrough solo game and level up some weapons to get the attachments you want is fantastic. The Breakthrough and Rush game types are also nice and I just enjoy the large scale, whimsical shooter they are offering here. Call of Duty takes itself very, very seriously and if that's for you - I won't yuck your yum, but BF2042 is more my speed.

Things I'd like to see return amounts to a lot of BF3. I really enjoyed the big terrain destruction events and frankly BF2042's extreme weather just doesn't compare to a sky scraper or enormous radio tower falling down in the map and taking thing out. I also would love to see a server browser and CQC pack make a comeback. I played so much of the CQC pack from BF3 and I really do miss that experience.

It has to be said that we are just now getting a form of the game we should've seen at launch. I am really exhausted with studios firing up the hype train past the point of control, releasing an unfinished game, then going on an apology tour and making it right. I am also utterly fed up with studios that should know better tuning out player feedback, learning that's a terrible idea, then going back and rectifying that mistake after the damage is done. That happened here and I feel like supporting them with a purchase is, at least in part, helping executives justify more of that bad behavior. On the other side of the coin, it's also supporting a fun experience that is now in a good spot and largely trending positive.

If you are wore out on the uninspired offerings of the other guys and enjoy a casual shooter, BF2042 might just be for you.
