in a year full of heavy hitters i didn't expect my current frontrunner for game of the year to be a random roguelike i bought on a whim because by chance it was on my steam front page on sale when i got paid and it looked neat. what the hell. if it had waited a few hours later hades 2 would have shadow dropped and i'd have missed this entirely. crazy times.

awesome game. the tutorial is a little much trying to explain everything but don't worry about understanding everything immediately, you only really need to figure out one or two things to be able to progress and it makes it more satisfying when you figure out how other things work in real time. there's a gem here so stick with it. it's all the right parts slay the spire mixed with an intriguing story and a fun cast of characters and crazy run potential you want from a roguelike. and it's got workshop support! i played a run with kiseki rean (coincidentally my avatar just because i find him funny) and 100% orange juice suguri just now. could end up being really special. hell it already is.

tried to tell my friend that the thunderstorm would cause the giant cog she was holding to conduct electricity and that would kill her but kept stumbling over my words as she dropped it on another friend killing them immediately before i could and while stunned by that she and our fourth friend perished horrendously from the second lightning bolt with one of them ragdolling off into the distance and then i died from a big monster about a 15 seconds later

easily my game of the year for 2020. anything i was worried about going into it the game managed to put my mind at ease immediately, which admittedly wasn't as much as most people due to the fact i love jrpgs in general, but i digress. an absolute must play video game even if you're not familiar with the franchise (although the more you know the more you're rewarded). i love you ichiban.

Juan the Small Magical Latino Cat is actually on screen in this one. The perfect sequel.

Quickly becoming one of my favourite games and definitely a highlight from 2019 that I wish I got to sooner. If we use Bloodborne as the perfect 10 on the Soulslike scale then if you remove everything else about the game then this is only about a 6 to a 7/10. Everything feels nice and fluid enough, with some clunk weighing it back and even if that was fixed it could still not compete with the king. The key thing this game has going for it though is that there is an everything else. The character creation is phenomenal and it's real fun to use those monstrosities just explore all of these totally not familiar areas. And oh man do I love having Yakumo sit down and monologue to me about whatever every other cutscene. The writing and characters are super dumb and cheesy but I'm following along with all of it and it leads to genuine "oh ♥♥♥♥" moments whenever I manage to start clicking together what the plot is trying to tell me because of whatever pindrop moment just happened always leaving me wanting to see what's next. I got it on sale but I absolutely wouldn't have regretted buying this full price so it kind of feels like a steal at the 40% off I got it for. There's a lot to love here. The DLC contains none of it so don't get that. I wish Coco would kill me.

I fell through the floor and it autosaved and now whenever I try to launch the game I spawn falling into the endless void on repeat.
