Unquestionably the best co-op game I've played in a long, long time. It launched a little bit barebones but the devs have made great strides in the month since it was released and it's obvious they care a lot about making the game into a great product. There's already enough here to keep you busy for hundreds of hours, so I definitely recommend buying it at full price (which is already discounted from a AAA game which are mostly overpriced these days). Art direction and music are absolutely top-notch and the gameplay is very engaging. The game absolutely deserves more love than it gets from a lot of people.

There's nothing wrong with the core gameplay of this game, it's actually very good, but the developers do a lot of really scummy stuff like giving codes for cosmetic items out to streamers and hand them out at cons when they can't be obtained any other way. Just be aware of that before you spend money on this.

Don't buy this game. My god, don't do it. I like QTEs so I thought 'Oh, this is the Ace Combat I want to play!' but no, it's just bad. The helicopter and gunship missions are terrible but the worst stinker is the ASM (Air Strike Mode). You have to keep your aircraft extremely low to the ground, since usually during air strike missions if you go too high you get shredded by SAMs and AA, which wouldn't normally be that dangerous except that ASM forces you into extreme low speed if you want to hit all the targets they point out. Which is a danger in and of itself, because of course if you go too slow then you stall and since you're so low to the ground to begin with... you crash. It's just not fun. Pick up Assault Horizon Legacy on the 3DS instead, despite the name it's a remake of Ace Combat 2 with newer mechanics.

I like QTEs.

Now I know that makes me basically the Antichrist to a lot of people playing games today, but I grew up with games like Shenmue and I think QTEs, when used right, can add a fair bit of immersion so you still feel like it's you the player kicking ass even in cutscenes. It's true that a lot of games today misuse them, but they do have their place.

That aside, I thought this game was pretty clever. I got it on sale for ~50 cents, but even if I'd paid full price I felt like I got my money's worth out of it. One playthrough takes about 20 minutes, but there are branching paths so overall there's a fair bit of content to see. The writing is a bit on the cringy side overall, but there were also a fair amount of pretty good jokes, which is pretty impressive considering how short the game is. I'd recommend this game to anyone with a few bucks who's looking for a way to kill a couple of hours.
