Borderlands has a little age, but that doesn't diminish its value any; its affordability lends itself well to 4-player shenanigans. You and up to three friends are pitted against a plethora of foes using a randomly-generated assortment of weaponry and items.
While the game has a "story", its merit lies in its ability to experience the entire thing with your friends. A large variety of side-quests and up to 3 playthroughs on a single character (with the level of enemies scaling each time) mean you could invest a lot of time into this game, even on a single "run".
However, Borderlands does have some issues. Some people I've played with complain of random (but eventual) crashes, and far too often the "loot chest" system decides it wants to give one character type all the gear (for instance, insisting that the Hunter needs more sniper rifles). Barring that, it is a classic for anyone with three friends and way too much time on their hands, and its GOTY award is well-deserved.

An excellent revisit by Valve Software. Following a more traditional 3-act structure, this game answers questions about Aperture's (and GlaDoS') origins, introduces many new mechanics for players to master, and has about triple the length of the original game (more if you get stuck on some of the puzzles, like I did). My only complaint would have to be that aid isn't provided on some of the hardest puzzles in the game regardless of how long you are stuck there; while the original game shared this, the puzzles were debatably easier. Additionally, it's effectively a one-trick pony: once completed, you really have no reason to come back. That being said, it is an excellent game, though probably not deserving of fifty dollars.

A great game if you haven't played Fallout 3. A good game otherwise, but better if you can get over the fact it uses the same engine and shares assets with the original Bethesda title. Actually stays truer to the Fallout series than 3 did.
