Short but fantastic. Level design & pacing are top notch. Weapons and movement feel great. I was having such a good time with this that I spaced it out over 4 days playing a level or two at a time, and each day I was genuinely looking forward to playing more.

Early Access Review
It's difficult to put into words just how good this game is. Unlike the modern polish of something like Doom Eternal, Ultrakill leans into its engine quirks like shooters from the 90s. Cancel your ground stomp with a wall jump and fly into the sky. Parry your own shotgun bullets to create an explosion. The game encourages you to be inventive and discover different weapon and enemy interactions. There's a lot of them.

Enemy design is solid, but not quite up to par with Doom Eternal. Easily identifiable animations and silhouettes are a plus. Boss design is probably the best of any shooter out there. If you make it past the boss at the end of Layer 1 and the game doesn't click for you at that point, it's probably not for you.

Level design is fine. The early levels are very simple. Later worlds open up and throw different mechanics at you, and the first layer of Act 2 in particular I think is very promising as to what's to come later in Early Access. Whether it's navigating small platforms surrounded by hot sand or plunging the player into near darkness, there's lots of neat ideas that break up the pacing but don't overstay their welcome. With the amount of movement skills available to the player, sections that might be frustrating in another game instead just ask you to make full use of your toolkit.

This is the best singleplayer FPS I've ever played, and it's not even complete yet. Highly recommended.
